Description
Mount Alfred / Ari is a 1,375 m non-volcanic mountain in Otago, New Zealand, between the Dart and Rees valleys near Glenorchy. Its wedge-like shape reflects ice-age glacial erosion. Documented ascents pass through beech forest, tussock and rocky terrain to a ridge overlooking Lake Wakatipu and surrounding ranges. Access is restricted: DOC lists the Forest Track as closed when checked on 12 September 2026, while Access Glenorchy describes guided arrangements on private land. Establish permission and availability before visiting; older trip reports do not determine present trail status.

Routes
Pendakian puncak terpandu / Guided summit hike — akses privat / private access
Sulit / ChallengingAccess Glenorchy describes a guided ascent of about three hours through successive vegetation zones, streams and waterfalls to the ridge, with 6–8 hours allocated overall. This is access through private land requiring guide arrangements, not an independent outing on the old trail. DOC listed the public Forest Track as closed on 12 September 2026. Establish permission, guide availability and the agreed starting point; reaching the summit depends on conditions and time.
