Information
- Elevation
- 580 m
- Country
- Ghana (GH)
- Location / Range
- Dataran Volta, Distrik Adaklu — Volta Region, sekitar 12 km dari Ho
- Mountain type
- Inselberg berdiri sendiri (freestanding) di dataran Volta
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates
- 6.4973, 0.4985
- Difficulty
- Sedang.
Description
Mount Adaklu is a solitary mountain on the Volta plains of Ghana, about 12 km from the town of Ho and roughly 2.5 hours' drive from Accra. Wikipedia and Wikidata give its height as 580 m, while the peak database PeakVisor lists 602 m with 509 m of prominence — and that high prominence explains its visual impact: it stands alone above flat country, which is why it is often called Ghana's tallest freestanding mountain. Nine villages ring its base — among them Helekpe, Avanyaviwofe, Goefe, Sikama, Abuadi and Kordiabe — inhabited by Ewe communities who hold the mountain in traditional reverence. Helekpe is the main gateway for the climb, with guides, simple lodging and an information centre. The surrounding area is known for wild bees, palm wine and the local distilled spirit akpeteshie. The climb is short but not easy. The path rises through maize farms, then tall grass, and finally dense forest — a change of vegetation zones reminiscent of far higher African mountains. The hardest part is a near-vertical rock section that has to be climbed, and which is just as demanding on the way down. Time estimates differ between sources, from around 1.5 hours round trip according to the local operator to a three-hour ascent in encyclopedic accounts. From the summit the view sweeps across the Volta plains, the Kalakpa Resource Reserve barely 3 km away, and on clear days the Ghana–Togo border. That reserve holds kob, African buffalo, harnessed bushbuck, olive baboon and birds such as hooded vultures and pied crows. The mountain also carries real risk for those living at its foot: falling rocks destroyed farmland in August 2017, and a mudslide in May 2026 destroyed houses and vehicles in Helekpe.

Routes
Jalur Helekpe (jalur utama berpemandu)
Sedang — curam, berbatu, dengan satu ruas nyaris vertikalThe standard route to Adaklu's summit leaves from Helekpe village at the foot of the mountain, which provides guides and simple lodging. Time estimates differ sharply between sources: peak databases give a three-hour ascent, while the accredited local operator sells the climb as roughly 1 hour 30 minutes up and down for someone of average fitness. The gap usually comes down to starting point and group pace. The path climbs through maize farms, then tall grass, and ends in dense forest before the final steep rock. Every hiker goes with a local guide and receives a safety briefing first. Birds, butterflies and sometimes monkeys are common along the way; from the top the Volta plains, the Kalakpa Resource Reserve and, on clear days, the Ghana–Togo border are all in view.

Sedang; tanpa tiket masuk jalur, pemandu 20–30 GHSThe most practical approach for hikers without their own vehicle. From Ho it is about 15 km to the foot of the mountain, reachable by car, trotro minibus or motorbike taxi to Adaklu Helekpe. The climb itself is estimated at 1.5–3 hours depending on fitness, and there is no entrance fee for the trail — but hiring a local guide is recommended, at roughly 20–30 GHS. An early start is advised to avoid the midday heat. The kit list is simple but relevant: plenty of water and snacks, sturdy boots, and layers for changing weather higher up.
SourceRuas batu nyaris vertikal menjelang puncak
Berat untuk pemula — memanjat batu, sulit saat basah dan saat turunThe section hikers talk about most: a run of near-vertical rock below the summit that genuinely has to be climbed rather than walked. An October 2011 trip report with the Ghana Mountaineers group calls this the hardest part, and just as demanding on the descent. Heavy rain a few days earlier had turned the path to slick mud, sharpening the risk. That party — twelve walkers from Accra plus eight members of the local tourism committee — also recorded the customary protocol before setting off: sharing local spirits with the village chief as part of asking permission to climb.

Adaklu is the kind of mountain that asks far more than its height suggests. The usual entry point is Helekpe village at its foot, some 12–15 km from Ho, and the climb is always guided — some accounts put the guide's fee around 20–30 GHS, while the accredited local operator sells full packages including a safety briefing before setting off. Local custom puts the chief's permission at the start of the journey; one hiking party recorded sharing local spirits with the village chief as part of asking to climb. The path climbs through maize farms, then tall grass, and ends in dense forest — an unexpected sequence of vegetation zones for a mountain this size. The most-discussed section is a near-vertical run of rock that has to be climbed and is just as hard descending, especially when rain has turned the ground to slick mud. Time estimates differ sharply: from about 1.5 hours round trip according to the operator to a three-hour ascent in encyclopedic accounts and peak databases. An early start is advised to beat the heat, and the summit opens onto the Volta plains, the Kalakpa Resource Reserve and, on clear days, the Ghana–Togo border.
