Description
Mount Abrupt, known to the local Aboriginal peoples as Mud-Dadjug, is a sandstone peak of about 811 metres marking the southern end of the Grampians (Gariwerd) ranges in Victoria, Australia, rising directly above the town of Dunkeld. As the 'southern gateway' to the Grampians, it forms one of the terminus points of the Grampians Peaks Trail that runs the length of the ranges. Its day walk of about 6.5 km return with roughly 531 m of ascent is rated Grade 4 (hard): climbing through heathy woodland and rocky slopes on hundreds of hand-built stone steps. From its relatively open summit, walkers gain 360-degree views to the Serra Range in the north, neighbouring Signal Peak, and the plains and town of Dunkeld to the south. Because of its steep ascent and limited shade, the walk demands reasonable fitness, yet it is prized by many hikers as one of the best-view day walks in the southern Grampians.

Accounts of the Mount Abrupt / Mud-Dadjug walk consistently describe a short but steep, leg-burning day walk of hundreds of stone steps, rewarded by 360-degree summit views. Many hikers combine it with neighbouring Signal Peak. Recurring themes: the fitness required, the beauty of the views over the Serra Range and Dunkeld plains, advice to avoid wet weather (slippery rock), and the southern-gateway atmosphere of the Grampians. Some sources frame it as the terminus section of the Grampians Peaks Trail.
