Description
Mouaputa (Mou'a Puta, literally 'pierced mountain') is one of Moorea's most iconic peaks in French Polynesia, rising about 830 metres on the eastern side of the island. Its signature feature is a hole that passes right through the summit tip, visible from many points around the island. Polynesian legend says the hole was made by a spear thrown from Tahiti by the demigod Pai. Geologically it is an eroded remnant of the rim of Moorea's extinct shield volcano, together with Mount Tohivea and Mouaroa. Reaching the summit is a tough, technical undertaking: the route pushes through dense tropical forest before climbing near-vertical walls that require fixed ropes, chains and ladders. Because of the exposure and slippery ground it is almost always climbed with a guide, who also shares the legend and the peak's sacred meaning.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Accounts of climbing Mouaputa consistently describe a tough but memorable full-day adventure. Vlogs and reports stress the climb through dense tropical forest, then a technical, highly exposed final section with fixed ropes, chains and ladders to reach the summit 'hole' — where hikers can stand inside the mountain's pierced gap. Many sources highlight the legend of the demigod Pai's spear and the peak's sacred status, and recommend a local guide. Sweeping views of Moorea, its twin bays and neighbouring peaks are the main reward.
