Description
Morne Trois Pitons (1,387 m) is a volcano that forms Dominica's second-highest peak and lends its name to Morne Trois Pitons National Park — the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the eastern Caribbean (inscribed 1997). The park, in the island's south near Roseau and the village of Laudat, is renowned for its geothermal wonders: the Boiling Lake (the world's second-largest boiling lake), the sulphur-steaming Valley of Desolation, Titou Gorge, Middleham Falls, and the Freshwater and Boeri lakes. The Boiling Lake trek — starting at Titou Gorge and crossing the Valley of Desolation, roughly 6–8 hours round trip — is Dominica's signature hike and is usually done with a guide. The summit of Morne Trois Pitons itself is far less frequented: steep, often muddy, and buried in dense rainforest. Wet weather keeps the trails slippery for much of the year.
