Description

Monte Velino (2,487 m) is the highest peak of the Sirente-Velino massif in the Central Apennines, Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, and the highest point in the Tiber river basin. Rising between the Fucino plain and the valleys of the Aterno, Salto and Velino rivers, this limestone mountain has a rough, almost desert-like appearance with specialised high-altitude vegetation. It lies within the Sirente-Velino Regional Park and is home to the Apennine wolf, wild boar and the Marsican brown bear. The most popular route starts from Rosciolo dei Marsi (near Santa Maria in Valle Porclaneta): up the Vallone di Sevice to the Rifugio Capanna di Sevice (2,119 m), across the Tre Sorelle area with its wide panorama, then up the final summit cone — around 4–4.5 hours in all. With its exposed upper ridge and large elevation gain (about 1,400 m), the ascent is graded EE (for expert hikers). A long loop via the Valle Majelama is often used to close the circuit.

Routes

Direttissima (salita diretta al Velino)

EE/impegnativo: jalur langsung dan curam dengan medan berbatu/scree
1 hari (naik lebih singkat namun jauh lebih curam)

A more direct, steeper variant to the Velino summit, minimising switchbacks by tackling the slope directly. Rocky, scree-covered terrain demands sure footing and good fitness; it is often combined with a descent by the normal route to form a loop.

EE (escursionisti esperti): jalur panjang non-teknis, berat elevasi ±1.400 m, punggungan atas terbuka
1 hari (±4–4,5 jam naik; total p.p. 7–8 jam)

The area's main route. From the Santa Maria in Valle Porclaneta car park (Rosciolo dei Marsi, ~1,020 m) up to the Passo Le Forche, then up the Vallone di Sevice to the spring and the Rifugio Capanna di Sevice (2,119 m). The trail continues to the Tre Sorelle area with its wide panorama, skirts the walls of the Val di Teve, and finishes up the summit cone of Monte Velino at 2,487 m. The lower section is very steep; the upper ridge is exposed and unshaded.

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Monte Velino (2,487 m), the highest peak of the Sirente-Velino massif in Abruzzo, is usually done from Rosciolo dei Marsi up the Vallone di Sevice, or via the steeper Direttissima. Climbers' footage highlights the exposed, arid upper ridge, the wide panorama over the Fucino plain, and the EE (expert-hiker) character with its large elevation gain. Some make a long loop via the Valle Majelama.
