Description

Monte Pollino (2,248 m) is the peak that gives its name to the Pollino Massif, straddling the border of Calabria and Basilicata within the Pollino National Park — Italy's largest national park and a UNESCO Global Geopark. The massif's true highest point is actually its immediate neighbour Serra Dolcedorme (2,267 m), which is also the highest summit of the entire Southern Apennines; the two are commonly climbed together on a long day out from Colle dell'Impiso via Colle Gaudolino and the 'Sentiero dei Pastori' (Shepherds' Path). The massif is famous for the pino loricato (Pinus leucodermis), a rare Balkan pine that is the park's emblem — including the 'Patriarca', one of the oldest trees in Europe. Its northern slopes preserve traces of Würm glaciation in the form of moraines and erratic boulders, and permanent snow patches often linger into late summer. On a clear day the summit ridge offers views stretching from the Ionian to the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Routes

Monte Pollino & Serra Dolcedorme dari Colle dell'Impiso (via Colle Gaudolino)

Escursionistico (E/EE) — ~18–20 km, dislivello ~1.000–1.200 m
~7–8 jam pulang-pergi

The classic route starts at Colle dell'Impiso (~1,573 m). A gravel track descends to the Piano di Vaquarro, then a path climbs through woodland to Colle Gaudolino (~1,684 m), a broad saddle between Serra del Prete and Monte Pollino. From there the 'Shepherds' Path' climbs the flank of Monte Pollino through a wooded belt and then rockier terrain dotted with loricato pines to the summit (2,248 m). Many hikers continue to the saddle and up neighbouring Serra Dolcedorme (2,267 m), the massif's highest point. It is a long outing; carry enough water and beware of fog on the summit plateau.
