Description

Monte Cimone (2,165 m) is the highest peak of the northern Apennines and the highest point of both the Province of Modena and the entire Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. Rising in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines near the towns of Sestola and Fanano, this open-ridged mountain is one of the most prominent summits (an ultra-prominent peak, ~1,577 m of prominence) in northern Italy. Its summit hosts meteorological and military/scientific installations, with a sweeping panorama that on clear days reaches the Alps, the Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its northern slopes form the largest ski area of the Apennines (Cimone), while in summer it becomes a popular hiking destination. The easiest walking route starts from the Pian Cavallaro / Lago della Ninfa area (near the top of the lift access) and follows the final exposed ridge to the summit; ascents from the valley are considerably longer with a large elevation gain.

Routes

Salita da Sestola (jalur lembah)

EE (escursionisti esperti): jalur panjang dari lembah, medan berbatu, punggungan atas terbuka
1 hari (naik lebih panjang, berat elevasi besar)

A longer, more demanding variant starting from the Sestola side, climbing the mountain's slopes until it joins the ridge route to the summit. The elevation gain is far greater than from the lift access, with rocky terrain and an exposed upper section; suited to those wanting a full valley-to-summit ascent.

Via normale dari Pian Cavallaro / Lago della Ninfa

E (escursionistico): jalur bertanda tanpa peralatan teknis, punggungan atas terbuka
1 hari (±1,5–2,5 jam naik dari titik angkutan; lebih lama dari Lago della Ninfa)

The easiest walking route to the summit. From the Lago della Ninfa / Pian Cavallaro area (near the top of the ski access) a marked trail follows the final open ridge to the 2,165 m summit and its observatory. Starting from altitude keeps the elevation gain moderate, but the upper section is exposed to wind and storms; distance and time increase considerably if starting from Sestola or Fanano.

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Monte Cimone (2,165 m), the highest peak of the northern Apennines in the Province of Modena, is usually done along the ridge from the Pian Cavallaro/Lago della Ninfa area (near the lift access) or via a steeper direttissima. Climbers' footage highlights the exposed summit ridge, the observatory on the top, and the wide panorama toward the Alps and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Some ascend from Sestola or make a multi-day trek across the Modenese Apennines.
