Description

Monte Binga (2,436 m) is the highest mountain in Mozambique and the second-highest in Zimbabwe, sitting right on the border of the two countries in the Chimanimani Mountains. The area is protected as the Chimanimani Transfrontier Park and is known for its dramatic quartzite landscape, the Bundi valley, montane forest and endemic biodiversity. Reaching the summit is usually a two- to three-day trek: from the Zimbabwe side via Chimanimani village, climbing to the Mountain Hut by the Bundi River, then over Skeleton Pass and across the high plateau; or from the Mozambique side, following a river and climbing steeply through forest with an overnight camp before the final push. The terrain is rugged with no consistently clear path, the weather changes fast, and river crossings can be dangerous in the wet season, so a local guide is strongly advised.
