Description
Monte Amaro (2,793 m) is the highest peak of the Majella (Maiella) massif in Abruzzo and the second-highest mountain in the entire Apennines, at the heart of Majella National Park. Its summit is a vast limestone plateau often called a 'lunar landscape' — open, barren and waterless — with a small metal dome, the Bivacco Pelino, serving as an emergency shelter right at the top. The classic route starts from the Blockhaus / Rifugio Bruno Pomilio area on Maielletta (about 1,980 m), following the ridge and mountain-pine forest with long ups and downs past Monte Focalone before reaching the summit; variants can run 20–25 km round trip and demand the stamina of experienced hikers (E/EE). From the top, on a clear day, views stretch from the Apennine peaks to the Adriatic Sea. Because of the distance, the lack of water, and fast-changing weather on the open plateau, Monte Amaro is respected as the beautiful yet demanding 'king of the Majella'.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Italian-language accounts of Monte Amaro centre on the long climb to the 'roof of the Majella' from the Blockhaus / Rifugio Bruno Pomilio area, crossing the 'lunar' limestone landscape to the Bivacco Pelino at the 2,793 m summit. Some take demanding variants via the Rava del Ferro. Recurring themes: big distances, lack of water, and fast-changing open weather on the plateau.
