Description

Mont Ventoux (1,910 m) is the most prominent peak in Provence, southern France — standing alone above the plain, earning it the nickname 'Géant de Provence' (Giant of Provence). Its signature feature is a bald summit dome of white limestone scree that makes it look snow-capped year-round and is often called a 'lunar landscape'. The mountain is world-famous as a legendary Tour de France climb, but it is also a walking destination: the classic route from the village of Bédoin climbs more than 1,500 m through pine and cedar forest before emerging onto open scree toward the summit. The top carries an observatory/transmitter tower and is renowned for the fierce Mistral wind — its very name is often linked to the word for 'wind'. Ventoux also holds a place in history: the poet Petrarch's 1336 ascent is frequently cited as one of the first recorded recreational mountain climbs in Europe.

Routes

Dari Bédoin (rute klasik)

Non-teknis tetapi berat; ±10,6 km sekali jalan, beda tinggi ±1.463 m
1 hari (±4,5–5 jam naik; total pulang-pergi sepanjang hari)

The most classic walking route, starting from the village of Bédoin (near the Sainte-Colombe hamlet). It makes a long climb through pine and cedar forest, then emerges onto open, bald white limestone scree toward the summit (1,910 m). No technical skill is needed, but the distance and elevation gain make it tiring; the upper section is very exposed to wind and sun.

Dari Mont Serein via GR4 (sisi utara)

Non-teknis; beda tinggi lebih ringan (±450 m+ dari Mont Serein)
Setengah–1 hari (lebih pendek dari Bédoin)

A shorter route from the north side, starting around Mont Serein and partly following the GR4 long-distance path to the summit. It suits hikers who want to reach the top without the full long climb from Bédoin, though the summit section remains exposed to wind.

Climbing Experiences

As a walk, Mont Ventoux (1,910 m) is most classically climbed from the village of Bédoin — over 1,500 m of ascent through pine and cedar forest before emerging onto the bald white limestone scree toward the summit; about 20 km round trip and usually a full day. Shorter routes start from Chalet Reynard or from Mont Serein on the north side (partly following the GR4). Ventoux's challenge is more about weather than terrain: the fierce Mistral wind on the open summit, scorching, shadeless heat on the white scree in summer, and sudden changes in conditions. Many trip reports highlight the 'lunar landscape' near the top, the observatory tower, and sweeping views over Provence to the Alps and, on clear days, the Mediterranean.
