Description
Mont Tonkoui (also called Tonkpi, meaning "great mountain" in the Yacouba language) is the second-highest peak in Côte d'Ivoire, ~1,189 m, in the Dix-Huit Montagnes ("Eighteen Mountains") region near the city of Man in the west of the country. Unlike the national high point (Mount Nimba on the border), Tonkoui is relatively easy to reach: a winding road climbs from Man through cool forest to the summit, which is topped by a former relay/observation station and telecom antennas. From the top the view stretches toward the mountains of Guinea and Liberia in clear weather, making it a popular day trip from Man, often combined with the La Cascade waterfall and the traditional weaving villages of the area.
Routes
Jalur puncak dari Man
Mudah–sedang (non-teknis)Tonkoui's summit is reachable by a rough dirt track of roughly 25 km (~1.5 h) from the city of Man, passable by 4x4, moto-taxi or mountain bike; the on-foot forest ascent takes several hours but is non-technical. At the top stand telecom/broadcast antennas and a former multi-storey concrete relay/observation tower dated to the 1960s, plus a colonial-era residence known locally as the "Maison Blanche". The summit climate is cool and often misty; the view stretches toward the mountains of Guinea and Liberia on clear days. It is commonly done as a day trip from Man, often combined with the Ypou/Zadepleu waterfalls. The November–March dry season is the recommended window.
