Description
Mont Temehani is a 1,017-metre mountain (the Tefatua/Tefatoaiti summit) in northern Raiatea, Society Islands, French Polynesia, formed of two plateaus — Temehani Rahi and Temehani Ute Ute. This extinct hotspot volcano is famous as the only place on Earth where the tiare apetahi (Apetahia raiateensis) grows, a white five-petalled flower that has resisted all attempts at cultivation elsewhere and is an emblem of Raiatea. For local people, climbing Temehani carries a sense of cultural and ecological initiation. The plateau trek of about 13 km with roughly 750 m of ascent takes around six hours return and opens up panoramas of neighbouring islands such as Tahaa, Huahine, Bora Bora and Maupiti. Because it crosses private land and to protect the endemic flora, the hike must be done with a local guide.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Accounts of the Temehani plateau centre on the mix of a misty plateau trek and encountering the endemic tiare apetahi flower that grows nowhere else. Vlogs and reports show a route of about 13 km with roughly 750 m of ascent, panoramas of neighbouring islands (Tahaa, Huahine, Bora Bora), and a conservation message to protect the fragile flora. Many sources stress the need for a guide because the trail crosses private land and a protected area, as well as the cultural-ecological meaning of the climb for Raiatea's people.
