Description
Mont Rotui (Mont Rōtui) is an 899-metre ridge in the north of Moorea, French Polynesia, notable for dividing the island's twin bays — Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay. It is an eroded remnant of the rim of Moorea's extinct shield volcano. For some Moorea residents Rotui is sacred and inhabited by ancestral spirits. Though lower than the island's interior peaks, its trail is often called the hardest hike on Moorea: a continuous climb along a knife-edge ridge that drops away steeply on both sides, slippery even in dry weather and without fixed protection. The roughly three-hour ascent to the summit rewards hikers with sweeping views of the blue lagoon, both bays and much of the island's caldera. Because of the exposure and slippery ground, only fit, careful hikers should attempt it, ideally with a guide.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Accounts of climbing Mont Rotui almost uniformly call it one of the hardest and most nerve-racking hikes on Moorea. English- and French-language vlogs stress the knife-edge ridge that falls away steeply on both sides, slippery ground and hands-on sections, rewarded by panoramas of Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay from the 899 m summit. Several hikers describe the trail as dangerous and advise it only for fit, experienced walkers, ideally with a guide.
