Description
Mont Mou (about 1,219 m) rises inland from Païta in the south of New Caledonia's Grande Terre and is one of the most popular yet strenuous day hikes near Nouméa. Unlike many Pacific summits it is not volcanic; it belongs to the uplifted ultramafic (peridotite) terrain of southern New Caledonia. The climb starts in 'maquis minier' — dry scrub on ultramafic soils that quickly opens sweeping views over the Païta, Dumbéa and Nouméa plains — before entering a summit cloud forest draped in moss and ferns. The mountain and its endemic vegetation are protected as a botanical reserve, and the forest shelters emblematic native birds such as the cagou. The classic route is roughly 7 km round trip with about 950 m of ascent (around 5 hours); near the top hikers pass the tomb of Maxime Païta and the wreck of a US military aircraft that crashed in 1942, with views across to Mont Humboldt.
Routes
SourceClimbing Experiences
Hikers describe Mont Mou as a hard but rewarding day climb near Nouméa: a steep, sustained ascent from the heights above Païta through dry 'maquis minier' scrub with sweeping views over the coastal plains, then into a moss-draped summit cloud forest. Vlogs and trip reports repeatedly cite the 1,219 m elevation, about 950 m of ascent, a roughly 7 km round trip (around 5 hours), and near-summit landmarks including the tomb of Maxime Païta and a 1942 US aircraft wreck.
