- Best Season
- November–Februari (musim dingin gurun; siang lebih sejuk, malam dingin)
- Permits & Rules
Bukan destinasi trekking santai.
Description
Mont Idoukal-n-Taghès (2,022 m) is the highest point of Niger. It forms the top of the Bagzane plateau (Monts Bagzane) within the Aïr Massif — a range of ancient granite and volcanic rock rising from the desert in the Agadez Region of northern Niger. The Aïr is a Tuareg homeland and the core of the Aïr–Ténéré protected area. Although on the edge of the Sahara, its altitude creates a relatively wetter microclimate with pockets of vegetation, oases, and farmland around villages such as Tabelot. Reaching the summit is not a technical climb but an expedition: a long journey by 4x4 or camel caravan from Agadez, crossing the massif, then ascending a rocky slope of roughly 400–500 m from camp. The region is also rich in prehistoric rock art and iconic landscapes such as the Arakao 'crab claw'. Note: northern Niger faces serious security concerns, so this is documentation rather than a travel recommendation.
Routes
Ekspedisi Massif Aïr → puncak Bagzane (dari Agadez/Tabelot)
Non-teknis namun ekspedisi berat (scree ±400–500 m dari kamp; akses gurun jauh)The usual approach to Niger's high point: a long 4x4 and/or camel-caravan journey from Agadez through the Tabelot commune into the Aïr Massif, camping on the Bagzane plateau (around 1,500–1,600 m), then ascending a rocky scree slope to the Idoukal-n-Taghès summit (2,022 m). Guides note there is no standard marked day-route and no infrastructure; Tuareg guides and water logistics are essential.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Idoukal-n-Taghès / Mont Bagzane — the roof of Niger (2,022 m) in the heart of the Aïr Massif — is almost never 'hiked' in the ordinary sense; it is reached by a desert expedition with Tuareg guides from Agadez. Documentation is dominated by French-language travelogues, Nigerien media reports, and photo archives. All links below are verified live; most are in French.
