Description

Mont Humboldt (1,618 m), also called Pic Humboldt, is the second-highest peak in New Caledonia — just about ten metres short of Mont Panié — standing in the southern Chaîne Centrale of Grande Terre. Unlike many Pacific mountains it is not volcanic but built of ultramafic rock (peridotite), which produces poor soils rich in endemic plants. Its ascent is one of the 'Caillou's' most legendary treks: usually a two- to three-day journey starting from the end of the Galliéni mining track, crossing mining maquis and then a 'moss forest' — a distinctive cloud forest where branches and roots seem to float on a thick carpet of moss — before reaching peridotite boulder fields near the top. Two shelters serve as overnight bases: the lower Refuge du Vulcain and the higher Refuge du Mont Humboldt. The terrain is slippery, often rainy and cloud-wrapped, and hosts threatened endemic wildlife such as a rare honeyeater. The name honours Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859), the German naturalist and explorer often called the father of modern geography.

Routes

Ascension via piste Galliéni (refuges Vulcain & Humboldt)

Berat — tanjakan curam, medan licin, ransel berat, jalur tak berambu

Total sekitar 7 jam mendaki, umumnya dibagi 2–3 hari.

Berat — sangat panjang, dénivelé besar, medan menuntut
