Information

Elevation
593 m
Country
Mayotte (Prancis) (YT)
Location / Range
Grande-Terre bagian selatan — perbatasan komune Kani-Kéli dan Chirongui, Mayotte
Mountain type
Kerucut vulkanik sisa — ekstrusi fonolit yang lebih tahan erosi dibanding batuan sekitarnya, menyisakan puncak berbentuk piramida curam
Volcanic?
Yes — volcano
Coordinates
-12.9569, 45.1339
Difficulty
Sulit meskipun pendek (±3,2 km pulang-pergi, ±320 m tanjakan, sekitar 2 jam). Sebagian lereng melebihi kemiringan 70° dan bagian akhir lebih mirip memanjat daripada berjalan — tangan wajib dipakai.
Best Season
Musim kering, sekitar April–November. Berangkat pagi-pagi untuk menghindari panas tropis dan memastikan turun jauh sebelum gelap (jalur tanpa penerangan).
Permits & Rules

Description

Mont Choungui (593 m) is Mayotte's most iconic mountain — a sharp pyramid-shaped cone rising over the south of Grande-Terre island, on the boundary of the Kani-Kéli and Chirongui communes. Its striking shape is no accident: Choungui is the remnant of one of Mayotte's major volcanoes, a phonolitic extrusion far more erosion-resistant than the surrounding rock, so it still stands tall while the landscape around it has worn flat. Although only the island's second-highest peak (after Mont Bénara, 660 m), Choungui is its cultural symbol — it even appears on Kani-Kéli's coat of arms. The climb is short but brutal: about 3.2 km round trip with roughly 320 m of gain, done in some two hours, yet parts of the slope exceed 70° and the upper section consists of tall basalt steps that force hikers to use their hands — the route is even used as training ground by the French Foreign Legion. The walk starts among banana plantations at the base, enters dense root- and rock-filled forest, and finishes on an open rocky summit. Its vegetation is distinctive: the shrub Eugenia chounguiensis, endemic to this mountain, was only scientifically described in 2016. From the top, a 360° panorama sweeps across southern Mayotte — the indented coastline, Bouéni Bay, offshore islets, and the barrier reef that encircles the island's vast lagoon.

Routes

Desa Choungui → Puncak Mont Choungui (rute utama, pulang-pergi)

Sulit ('difficile') — pendek tetapi sangat curam; sebagian lereng melebihi 70° dan bagian atas menuntut penggunaan tangan
±2 jam pulang-pergi (3,2 km, tanjakan ±320 m)

The route starts about 500 m before Choungui village, near a roadside water reservoir with picnic tables marking the spot. The first section crosses banana plantations at the foot of the mountain before entering dense forest thick with roots and rocks. After that the character changes sharply: the climb turns extremely steep, with slopes exceeding 70° in places. The upper part consists of tall basalt steps — some over 50 cm high — forcing hikers to pull on roots and rock; it feels closer to easy scrambling than to walking. The steepness makes the descent the riskiest part: on wet rock, a slip is nearly guaranteed without using your hands for support. The summit (593 m) is an open rocky area with a rock outcrop that serves as the popular photo point. From the top, the view sweeps 360° across southern Mayotte: the indented coastline, Bouéni Bay, offshore islets, and the barrier reef enclosing the lagoon. Start early to avoid the tropical heat and be sure to descend well before dark, as the trail has no lighting; carry at least 2 litres of water and wear grippy shoes.

Route Segments

  1. 1

Titik awal (reservoir air, ±500 m sebelum desa Choungui) → Kebun pisang

Penanda: reservoir air di tepi jalan dan meja piknik; jalur awal melintasi kebun pisang, kemiringan masih landai

  2. 2

Kebun pisang → Hutan berakar & berbatu

Masuk hutan lebat; jalur dipenuhi akar dan batu, mulai menanjak jelas

  3. 3

Hutan → Lereng curam undakan basalt

Bagian tersulit: lereng kadang melebihi 70°, undakan batu basalt sebagian di atas 50 cm; tangan wajib dipakai. Jalur ini juga dipakai sebagai medan latihan Legiun Asing Prancis

  4. 4

Lereng curam → Puncak Mont Choungui (593 m)

    593 mdpl

Climbing Experiences

Mont Choungui is a deceptive little climb. It is only about 3.2 km round trip and can be done in two hours, yet nearly everyone who climbs it stresses the same thing: the ascent is brutal. Parts of the slope pass 70°, the basalt steps are tall — some over 50 cm — and the final section feels more like scrambling than walking; hands are mandatory. The trail starts among banana plantations near Choungui village, cuts through forest thick with roots and rocks, then emerges onto an open rocky summit. The most common warning concerns the descent: on ground this steep, one bad step on wet rock means a slide. The reward is a 360° panorama over southern Mayotte — Bouéni Bay, offshore islets, and the barrier reef enclosing the island's vast lagoon. The repeated advice: start early, carry at least 2 litres of water, wear grippy shoes, and never hike alone.
