Description
Mont Babor (Adrar n Babor) is a 2,004 m summit in the Babors range of Petite Kabylie, at the northern tip of Sétif Province in north-eastern Algeria. It is a landmark of North African conservation: on 5 October 1975 the Belgian researcher Jean-Paul Ledant discovered here the Algerian nuthatch (Sitta ledanti) — a nuthatch species endemic to the old-growth forest patches of Babor and Tababort, one of the most sensational bird discoveries of the 20th century. Its slopes are cloaked in a mixed forest of Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica), the endemic Numidian fir (Abies numidica) and zeen oak, forming a rich, humid biotope. A national park / protected area of about 1,700 hectares was established on the Babor massif to safeguard this endemic ecosystem. The climate is cold and wet, with rainfall exceeding 1,700 mm a year and heavy snow in autumn and winter. For Algerian hikers and naturalists, Babor is a classic forest-and-mountain destination from the Sétif/Béjaïa side — combining a climb to the summit, rare birdwatching, and dramatic old-growth conifer forest.
