Description

Mont Aiguille (2,087 m) is a solitary limestone tower rising from the Vercors massif in Isère, France, with a flat grassy summit ringed by near-vertical cliffs on all four sides. That isolated tabletop shape long earned it the name Mont Inaccessible. The mountain is celebrated as the birthplace of mountaineering: on 26 June 1492, on the orders of King Charles VIII, Antoine de Ville and his team scaled it using ladders and siege techniques — the first documented technical ascent in history. Today Mont Aiguille is not an ordinary trekking peak but a rock climb: its normal route works up exposed walls on holds and cracks, with a descent by a series of rappels. Its broad summit offers panoramas over the Vercors and the Trièves.

The first ascent of Mont Aiguille on 26 June 1492 by Antoine de Ville and his team, on the orders of King Charles VIII, using ladders and siege techniques. It is remembered as the first documented technical ascent and a symbol of the birth of mountaineering; its line differs from the modern normal route and is noted here as historical background.

Voie Normale (jalur normal) — dari La Richardière

Panjat batu berekposur ±PD/AD; seksi memanjat sekitar UIAA II–III, sebagian bertali/kabel tetap
±5–7 jam pulang-pergi dari titik parkir (pendekatan + panjat + rappel turun)

The main climbing route, starting from the hamlet of La Richardière (Chichilianne). The approach climbs through forest and meadow to the base of the wall (toward the Col de l'Aupet), then works up exposed rock on holds and cracks — some sections fitted with fixed ropes/cables — to the flat grassy summit. Descent is by a series of rappels, so rope skills are essential. Not for beginners without a guide.

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Mont Aiguille is not an ordinary trek but a rock climb up an isolated tower in the Vercors. The normal route works up exposed walls on holds and cracks (partly cabled/fixed-rope) and descends by a series of rappels. The clips below show real experiences: an ascent of the normal route, a documentary on this Vercors 'natural fortress', and its history as the birthplace of mountaineering since 1492.
