Description

Moncong Taloto is a hill in Baturappe village, Biringbulu district, Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, about 44 km southeast of Makassar. Its name follows a Makassarese pattern in which "moncong" means a high place or mountain — the same element found in Moncong Lompobattang, the official name of South Sulawesi's highest peak, and in the toponym Moncongloe in Maros; the meaning of "taloto" itself could not be confirmed in any verifiable linguistic source and is therefore left open. Elevation estimates range from about 350 to 430 m: GeoNames records 351 m, while digital elevation models (Viewfinder Panoramas and Copernicus) yield roughly 420–426 m. Prominence is low, around 75 m above the surrounding terrain, with higher ground (about 764 m) some 2 km to the north. Biringbulu is one of the nine upland districts of Gowa Regency, bordering Jeneponto to the south and Takalar to the west, covering 218.84 km², with its administrative centre at Lauwa some 140 km from the regency seat. The surroundings are dominated by farmland in a savanna climate, averaging about 26 °C with roughly 2,300 mm of rain per year. DATA LIMITATIONS: no climbing report, local news item or village record about Moncong Taloto could be verified. Every existing geospatial entry (OpenStreetMap, Wikidata Q25207675, GeoNames 6736414, and a bot-generated Cebuano Wikipedia stub) traces back to the same root — the NGA GNS toponym database — so these are not five independent sources but one replicated source. The climate and morphometric figures above are computed from global datasets, not field measurements.
