Description
Moncayo (2,314 m), whose main summit is known as Pico San Miguel, is the highest point of the Iberian System and stands on the border of Aragón (Zaragoza) and Castilla y León (Soria), Spain. Rising alone above the Ebro valley, the massif is often snow-capped and visible from far away, making it an icon of the region and the heart of the Moncayo Natural Park. The most popular ascent starts from the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Moncayo, climbing through the Circo de San Miguel—a cauldron-shaped glacial cirque—before a rocky ridge to the top. Though not technical, strong winds and fast-changing weather mean it should not be underestimated. The summit offers a panorama over the Ebro valley, the distant Pyrenees and the Soria highlands. The mountain is also rich in legend, from the Celtiberian Mons Caunus to the romantic tales of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer.

Routes
Vertiente soriana (sisi Castilla y León)
Sedang (jalur lebih panjang/berhutan dari sisi Soria)An alternative approach from the Soria side (Castilla y León), for example via the Agramonte area, tending to be more forested and quieter than the Aragón side. It joins the main slopes toward the summit and is popular with those wanting varied scenery and fewer weekend crowds.
Via Santuario del Moncayo — Circo de San Miguel
Sedang (tanjakan panjang, punggungan berbatu, tanpa kesulitan teknis)The most popular, classic route starting from the area of the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Moncayo on the Aragón side. The path climbs through forest into the Circo de San Miguel—a cauldron-shaped glacial cirque—before a rocky ridge to the Pico San Miguel summit (2,314 m). Non-technical, but the ridge winds can be fierce.
Climbing Experiences
Trip reports on Moncayo usually start from the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Moncayo and climb through the Circo de San Miguel—a cauldron-shaped glacial cirque—before a rocky ridge to Pico San Miguel. Many stress the strong ridge winds, fast-changing weather and long-lasting snow on the north side. The videos below cover several route variants and trail-running ascents of this highest peak of the Iberian System.
