Description

Vârful Moldoveanu (2,544 m) is the highest peak in Romania and the highest point in the entire Carpathian mountain chain stretching across Central Europe. Located in the Făgăraș Mountains in the Southern Carpathians, it is reached via long trails crossing rocky Carpathian ridgelines, alpine wildflower meadows, and in the right season, glacial lakes at the foot of the slopes. The main route from the Valea Rea trailhead requires about 8–10 hours return with over 1,300 m of elevation gain from the parking area. Rocky terrain and sparse markings on some sections demand map-reading and navigation skills. At the summit there is no hut or infrastructure — only a 360-degree panorama over endless Romanian mountains, with the hills of Transylvania visible on clear days.

Routes

Via Valea Rea — Rute Utama dari Utara

Berat; jalur panjang berbatu, beda tinggi besar, penanda minim di beberapa titik
22.00 km +1340 m 8–10 jam pulang-pergi dari trailhead

The most common and most direct route to Moldoveanu starts from the Valea Rea valley on the northern side, accessible from Cabana Negoiu (Negoiu hut). From the vehicle car park at around 1,200 m, the trail ascends through subalpine forest, enters the treeless zone with alpine meadows, and crosses the rocky Carpathian ridges that climb progressively to the 2,544 m summit. Some high-altitude sections require map navigation as trail markers are infrequent. There is no hut or reliable water source in the upper sections — bring enough water and food for a full day.

Climbing Experiences

Moldoveanu (2,544 m) is considered one of Romania's most demanding hikes — not due to extreme technical sections but because of the long distance and near-total lack of infrastructure along the route. The main route from the trailhead in Valea Rea (Cabana Negoiu area) requires a very early start, as afternoon weather on the summit often changes suddenly with thunderstorms arriving without warning. Hikers emphasize bringing a printed map and compass as trail markings are not always easy to follow. The views from the summit — especially the sweep of the Făgăraș Mountains east to west — are described as 'completely worth it' by nearly everyone who has reached the top. Best season is July–August when the trail is snow-free and conditions most stable.
