Description
Vârful Moldoveanu (2,544 m) is the highest point in Romania, rising in the heart of the Făgăraș Mountains—the most rugged part of the Southern Carpathians. Its summit is a pyramid of crystalline rock standing very close to its neighbour Vârful Viștea Mare (2,527 m), the two linked by a narrow saddle. Unlike many of Europe's national high points, Moldoveanu is not roadside: reaching it demands a long walk. The classic route follows the main Făgăraș ridge from Bâlea Lake (accessed via the Transfăgărășan road) over 2–3 days, while a southern approach from Cabana Valea Rea can be done in one long day by an early starter. Its landscape of glacial lakes, serrated ridgelines and alpine meadows makes it one of Romania's most sought-after trekking objectives.

Routes
Pendekatan selatan lewat Cabana Valea Rea (satu hari panjang)
Berat (dislivello besar dalam sehari)A southern alternative that lets fit, pre-dawn starters reach Moldoveanu in one long day, typically based at Cabana Valea Rea. It avoids the multi-day ridge trek but demands stamina given the large elevation gain and long hours on foot; an early start is essential to avoid afternoon storms.

Menengah–berat (non-teknis, panjang & berkomitmen)The classic route follows the main Făgăraș ridge from Bâlea Lake, reached via the Transfăgărășan road. Hikers pass Cabana Podragu before gaining the Viștea Mare–Moldoveanu saddle and the final pull to the summit. Because of the length and exposure of the high ridge, the trip is usually split over 2–3 days with hut overnights; weather can change sharply and afternoon storms are common.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Trip reports on Vârful Moldoveanu split between multi-day ridge expeditions from Bâlea Lake and long single-day attempts from the south. Vlogs and write-ups stress the scale and wildness of the Făgăraș: open high ridges, glacial lakes and weather that can turn quickly. Many hikers highlight distance and elevation gain—rather than technical difficulty—as the main challenge, and the value of early starts and overnight stays at mountain huts (Podragu, Valea Rea). A fast trail-run version from the Transfăgărășan shows just how far the route really is when compressed into one day.
