Description
Midžor (Миџор; Midzhur/Миджур in Bulgarian), 2,169 m, is the highest peak in Serbia and the highest of the Western Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina). It is a border peak straddling the Serbia–Bulgaria frontier. From the Serbian side, the most popular route starts at the Babin Zub ski-resort area and mountain hut — Babin Zub ('Grandmother's Tooth') being a striking rock formation — then follows a broad, open grassy ridge to the summit. Because the climb is not especially steep and follows a wide former border-patrol track, Midžor is regarded as one of Southeastern Europe's most beginner-friendly national high points, though weather on the exposed ridge can change fast. From the Bulgarian side, the ascent usually begins at the village of Chuprene via the Gorski Raj hut and a chain of peaks such as Ostra Chuka and Obov before the summit. The panorama takes in the Stara Planina landscape of both countries, making Midžor a year-round favourite for Serbian and Bulgarian hikers.

Routes
Jalur Standar sisi Serbia — Babin Zub → Midžor
Ringan–sedang: jalur lebar bekas jalur patroli perbatasan, tanpa bagian teknis; cocok untuk pemula dengan kebugaran dasarThe most popular route to Serbia's highest point starts at the Babin Zub mountain hut (~1,550–1,565 m) in the Stara Planina ski-resort area. From the hut it crosses the ski-slope area and climbs onto the broad, open main ridge, following a former Serbia–Bulgaria border-patrol track. After passing intermediate tops such as Žarkova čuka (~1,850 m), the trail traverses a spacious grassy ridge with views to both sides of the border up to the Midžor summit cairn (2,169 m). With moderate gain and a clear path it is ideal for beginners, but the near-shadeless ridge is hot in summer and very windy and cold when the weather turns.
Route Segments
- 1
Pondok Babin Zub (~1550 m) → area lereng ski / Žarkova čuka (~1850 m)
Formasi batu Babin Zub ('Gigi Nenek') menjadi penanda start; jalur lebar melewati area ski menuju punggung
- 2
Žarkova čuka → punggung perbatasan Serbia–Bulgaria
Punggung rumput terbuka; nyaris tanpa naungan; pemandangan ke kedua sisi perbatasan
- 3
Punggung perbatasan → Puncak Midžor (2169 m)
Tanjakan landai terakhir menuju tugu puncak; waspadai kabut dan angin kencang di puncak
Jalur sisi Bulgaria — Chuprene → pondok Gorski Raj → Midzhur
Sedang–berat: lebih panjang dan menanjak dibanding sisi Serbia; melewati rangkaian puncak sebelum puncak utamaA longer alternative from the Bulgarian side, usually done as a two-day trek. It starts at the village of Chuprene, following an eco-trail up to the Gorski Raj hut for an overnight. Day two follows the ridge over a chain of peaks such as Ostra Chuka (~1,967 m), the Replyanska 'church' (~1,969 m) and Obov (~2,033 m) before reaching the Midzhur/Midžor summit (2,169 m). It is physically more demanding and suited to hikers prepared for a mountain-hut overnight, rewarding them with the quieter western Stara Planina ridge.
Route Segments

Desa Chuprene → Pondok Gorski Raj
Jalur ekowisata dari desa; bermalam di pondok Gorski Raj
- 2

Climbing Experiences
Climbing Midžor is the easiest way to stand on Serbia's highest point. From the Serbian side, most hikers start at the Babin Zub hut in the Stara Planina ski-resort area, then follow a broad, open grassy ridge to the 2,169 m summit — roughly 2.5–3 hours up. The trail follows a former Serbia–Bulgaria border-patrol track, so it is wide and non-technical, well suited to beginners, though almost shadeless (hot in summer, windy at the top). Many hikers also tackle Midžor in snowy winter as a challenge. From the Bulgarian side the ascent is longer: starting at Chuprene village via the Gorski Raj hut and the Ostra Chuka–Obov peak chain, usually done as a two-day trek. The clips below — in Serbian, Bulgarian and English — show actual trail conditions, the Babin Zub rock formation, the border-ridge panorama, and both summer and winter ascents.
