Description

Mentok Kangri (about 6,250 m) is a cluster of snow peaks on the Rupshu-Changthang plateau of Ladakh, rising directly above Lake Tso Moriri near the village of Korzok. The name "Mentok Kangri" is applied to several neighbouring summits (often called Mentok Kangri I, II and III) along the same ridge, so many expeditions target one of them as a relatively non-technical 6,000 m peak. Because base camp already sits at very high altitude and the summit route is a moderately angled snow slope with no serious technical climbing, the mountain is popular as a "trekking peak" for climbers seeking their first 6,000 m summit — provided acclimatisation is thorough. Ascents are usually combined with the classic Rumtse–Tso Moriri trek or start straight from Korzok, offering sweeping views of the blue Tso Moriri lake, the Changthang salt flats and ranks of Trans-Himalayan peaks. Access requires an Inner Line Permit as the area lies near the frontier.

Routes

Jalur Normal dari Korzok / Tso Moriri (base camp tinggi)

Berat non-teknis (F/PD-): lereng salju bersudut sedang; tantangan utama ketinggian >6.000 m, bukan kesulitan teknis
2–3 hari dari Korzok (mendirikan base camp tinggi, hari puncak ~6–9 jam pulang-pergi)

The most common route starts at the village of Korzok on the shore of Lake Tso Moriri. Climbers move up to a high base camp on the Rupshu plateau, then on summit day follow moraine and a moderately angled snow slope to one of the Mentok Kangri summits (often Mentok Kangri II) at around 6,100–6,250 m. With no serious technical climbing, success hinges on thorough acclimatisation and an early start while the snow is firm. The summit gives a panorama of Tso Moriri and the Changthang expanse.

Kombinasi Trek Rumtse–Tso Moriri lalu puncak

Berat (trek dataran tinggi lintas beberapa pass >5.000 m + hari puncak non-teknis)
8–10 hari (trek Rumtse–Tso Moriri ~7 hari sebagai aklimatisasi, ditambah 2–3 hari pendakian puncak)

A popular approach that uses the classic Rumtse–Tso Moriri trek for acclimatisation: crossing a series of high passes (Kyamar La, Mandalchan La, Shibuk La and others above 5,000 m) across the Changthang plateau before reaching Tso Moriri. Once the body has adjusted to altitude, the team sets a base camp and climbs to a Mentok Kangri summit. This strategy lowers altitude-sickness risk compared with rushing the peak straight from Leh.

Climbing Experiences

Most Mentok Kangri footage consists of expedition vlogs from the Tso Moriri side: climbers drive to Korzok, set a high base camp on the Rupshu plateau, then ascend a moderately angled snow slope to one of the Mentok Kangri summits (often Mentok Kangri II) above 6,000 m. Recurring themes are the importance of gradual acclimatisation, the cold of the Changthang high plateau, and the panorama of Tso Moriri lake from the top. Many videos pair the climb with the Rumtse–Tso Moriri trek as both approach and acclimatisation.
