- Big Ben Massif, Heard Island, Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands — southern Indian Ocean, about 4,100 km southwest of Perth and about 1,700 km north of Antarctica
- Mountain type
- Active stratovolcano — the summit of the Big Ben massif on Heard Island, sub-Antarctic Southern Indian Ocean; the highest point of Australian sovereign territory
- Volcanic?
- Yes — volcano
- Coordinates
- -53.1000, 73.5167
- Difficulty
- Expedition — not a recreational climb: only three successful ascents (1965, 1983, 2000) out of several major expeditions; it involves steep glacier routes, crevasses, sulfur gas, and extreme sub-Antarctic conditions; access requires several days at sea through dangerous waters
- Best Season
- The Antarctic summer (December–February) offers the relatively most stable weather window, though the weather can still change drastically within hours; the 1965 expedition sailed November–January
- Permits & Rules
- A permit from the Australian Antarctic Division is required (submit ≥5 months before departure via EIA@aad.gov.au); access to HIMI Territory is strictly regulated by the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands Environment Protection and Management Ordinance 1987; there is no regular commercial transport — travel is via chartered ship from Australia or Reunion
- Hazards
- An active volcano with a constantly changing crater, lava flows, sulfur gas and steam emissions from the summit vent; crevasses and seracs on the glacier route; extreme sub-Antarctic weather (snowstorms, strong winds, zero visibility); high waves when landing on the coast; no rescue infrastructure on the island; medical evacuation thousands of kilometers away
Description
Mawson Peak (2,745 m) is the summit of the Big Ben massif — an active stratovolcano that forms virtually all of Heard Island in the sub-Antarctic Southern Indian Ocean. It is not only the highest point on Heard Island but also the tallest peak under full Australian sovereignty, surpassing every summit on mainland Australia. Heard Island lies roughly 4,100 km south-west of Perth and 1,700 km north of Antarctica — one of the most remote and inaccessible places on Earth. The volcano remains active: eruptions have been documented since 1881, with major activity in 2000–2001, 2003–2004, 2006–2008, and ongoing lava flows detected as recently as January 2024. The peak is named after Australian Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson, who visited the island in 1929. Only three expeditions have succeeded in reaching the summit (1965, 1983, 2000), making it one of the rarest-climbed significant summits on Earth. The entire HIMI territory is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, strictly protected under Australian law.

Routes
Ekspedisi Mawson Peak via Gletser Big Ben (Rute Historis 1965)
Ekspedisi (puncak ekstrem) — memerlukan pengalaman pendakian gunung berapi gletser, peralatan ekspedisi lengkap, dan izin resmi Australian Antarctic DivisionThe route used in the first successful ascent (25 January 1965, Warwick Deacock's team) and the 2000 expedition (from the west, as a new route). The approach begins with a beach landing from a charter vessel through surf and a raft — itself hazardous. From shore, teams cross Brown Glacier toward the base of Big Ben, then ascend a steep glacial route (up to ±45° in places) through crevasses and seracs, with sulphurous steam and gas from active vents intensifying near the summit crater. There is no permanent route: snow and ice change every season, the active crater can alter the topography, and crevasses open without warning. A summit attempt is only possible during a weather window — on this island, that is deeply unpredictable. The 2000 expedition pioneered a new western approach after a previous attempt two days earlier was beaten back by extreme weather.
Route Segments
- 1
Kapal Charter → Pendaratan Pantai Heard Island
Perairan sub-Antartika sangat kasar; pendaratan di pantai terbuka menggunakan rakit karet — salah satu bagian paling berbahaya dari seluruh ekspedisi; 1965: rakit terbalik saat mendarat
- 2
Pantai → Kaki Big Ben (via Brown Glacier)
Penyeberangan gletser dengan crampons dan ice axe; risiko crevasse tersembunyi tinggi; kemah di kaki massif menunggu jendela cuaca
- 3
Kaki Big Ben → Puncak Mawson Peak
Lereng gletser curam ±45°, crevasse dan serac, gas belerang dari vent aktif makin kuat di ketinggian atas; kawah aktif berubah setiap tahun
Pendakian kilat dari Base Camp Pesisir (kondisi cuaca optimal)
Sangat berat (glasial + vulkanik, cuaca sub-Antartika)In favourable weather conditions (rare), experienced teams have managed to climb Mawson Peak in a 2-day round trip from the coastal base camp. The route crosses the continuously moving Big Ben glacier (with careful attention to crevasses), volcanic rock slopes in the upper section, and the summit caldera. The upper mountain sometimes shows active fumarolic activity adding volcanic gas hazards. The climb may only be attempted by experienced teams, in coordination with the Australian Antarctic Division, and with full self-sufficiency in remote terrain. Suitable weather windows are brief and unpredictable.
SourceRute Barat via Big Ben Massif (Variasi Ekspedisi)
SourceRute Long Ridge / Northwest Face (jalur ekspedisi standar)
Ekstrem teknis — névé, gletser aktif, cuaca sub-antarktik; hanya untuk tim berpengalaman dengan perlengkapan mountaineering penuhThe only route successfully repeated to Mawson Peak. The ascent begins from Heard Island's shore — typically Skua Bay or the northwestern side — after disembarking from the ship by inflatable boat through ferocious sub-Antarctic swells. From the shore, teams climb across lava and rock to the Big Ben glacier, then cross the active glacier with dangerous hidden crevasses, and ascend progressively steeper névé fields toward the summit zone. The final section threads between the still-active vent (emitting gas and periodically lava) and the glacier margin. The weather forcing many expeditions to turn back even after reaching high on the mountain is the main challenge — genuinely good weather windows are extremely rare. On the original summit day in 1965, five climbers from the Patanela expedition reached the top around midday; the second and third successful ascents (1983 via Long Ridge, 2000 via western route) used similar variations. All expeditions require: a ship for access, full technical mountaineering kit (crampons, ice axes, ropes, harnesses), glacier travel and crevasse rescue experience, a permit from the Australian Antarctic Division, and contingency preparation for extended weather delays.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Mawson Peak on Heard Island is one of the rarest-climbed significant summits on Earth — only three expeditions have succeeded in its entire recorded history (1965, 1983, 2000). The difficulty is not extreme technical climbing but extraordinary inaccessibility: a sub-Antarctic location requiring days of dangerous sea passage, zero infrastructure, and a continuously active volcano. Available accounts are expedition journals, volcanological documentation from research vessels, and scientific reports — not recreational trip reports. Consistent themes: unparalleled island beauty and remoteness, dangerous landing conditions through heavy surf and swells, crevasses and sulphurous steam vents on the glacial summit route, and an extremely narrow weather window for summit attempts. For most researchers and managers, witnessing its volcanic activity from a ship is already a remarkable experience.
