Description

Mawenzi is the second volcanic cone of the Kilimanjaro massif in Tanzania, standing east of the main Kibo summit at roughly 5,148 m. With about 849 m of prominence, it ranks as Africa's third-highest peak after Kibo and Mount Kenya, which puts it on the Seven Third Summits list. Unlike gently domed, dormant Kibo, Mawenzi is extinct, and hundreds of thousands of years of erosion have stripped its cone down to a jagged volcanic core of towers, pinnacles, and eastern cliffs that fall nearly a thousand metres. Its highest point is named Hans Meyer Peak. That difference in shape creates a sharp practical difference: climbing Kibo is a long ropeless trek, while topping out on Mawenzi is genuine alpine rock climbing requiring ropes, helmet, harness, and protection — the standard approach comes from the west via the north-west quarry or the Oehler buttress and up the Oehler gully. Because the rock is loose, rockfall is the dominant hazard, so climbs begin before dawn while the rock is still frozen in place. Park authorities cap group sizes and require certified technical guides. For most visitors, Mawenzi is admired from Mawenzi Tarn at its foot, a popular acclimatisation camp on the Rongai and Marangu routes to Kibo.

Routes

Hans Meyer Peak via Oehler Gully (sisi barat — jalur pemanjatan baku)

Panjat tebing alpin (bukan trekking); wajib tali, helm, harness, dan pengaman. Hanya untuk pendaki berpengalaman
~6–7 jam naik, ~4 jam turun; total sekitar 10–11 jam dari kemah dasar

The standard approach to Hans Meyer Peak, Mawenzi's highest point, comes from the west: climbers enter via the north-west quarry or the Oehler buttress, then ascend the Oehler gully. Base camp is Mawenzi Camp at about 4,480 m. Climbing gear is mandatory — ropes, helmet, harness, carabiners, slings, rappel devices — and conditions may still call for crampons and an ice axe. The dominant hazard is rockfall from loose rock and scree, so climbs begin before dawn while the rock is still frozen in place. Park authorities cap participation tightly: minimum age 18, very small parties, certified technical guides, and daylight-only movement.

Mawenzi Tarn via Jalur Rongai (pendekatan trekking, tanpa memanjat puncak)

Trekking; non-teknis, tetapi berada di ketinggian tinggi (kemah sekitar 4.300 m)
Bagian dari trekking Kilimanjaro 6–7 hari; Mawenzi Tarn dicapai pada hari ketiga

The most common way to see Mawenzi up close without climbing it. The Rongai route — Kilimanjaro's only approach from the north — passes Mawenzi's western foot and camps at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, a small lake directly beneath the jagged walls. The camp serves as an acclimatisation point before crossing the Saddle, the barren plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo, to Kibo Hut and Kilimanjaro's main summit. Trekkers on this route do not touch Mawenzi's summit; climbing it requires a separate permit and technical guide.

Climbing Experiences

Mawenzi experiences split in two. Most trekkers only reach Mawenzi Tarn, the small lake at the cone's western foot that serves as an acclimatisation camp on the Rongai and Marangu routes toward Kilimanjaro's main summit, Kibo — enjoying Mawenzi's jagged walls up close without climbing them. A far smaller group actually climbs Hans Meyer Peak, Mawenzi's highest point, via roped alpine rock climbing from the west. The sources below cover both and are labelled honestly, since footage of the Mawenzi summit itself is rare.
