Description

Maungarei / Mount Wellington is a volcanic cone in Auckland, New Zealand, with an elevation of 135 metres recorded by Wikidata. The Tūpuna Maunga Authority describes a cone rising about 100 metres from base to summit, formed roughly 10,000 years ago. Surviving pā features include terraces, crop-storage pits and shell middens vulnerable to erosion. The main entrance is on Mountain Road; the summit road has excluded private motor vehicles since December 2018, with special access available on request for visitors with limited mobility. Walking accounts describe a steep ascent, potentially slippery scoria and views over Panmure Basin and Auckland’s harbours. Visitors can combine the summit walk with the Stonefields Heritage Trail, taking care to protect the cultural remains.

Climbing Experiences

Four Maungarei visit videos are complemented by two first-person accounts: an outing from Panmure Station and family walking practice for longer treks. The blogs add detail on the ascent, slippery scoria, views and Stonefields connections. The 2014 account predates the road closure to private vehicles in 2018; consult the official profile for current access rules.
