Description
Maungarei, also known as Mount Wellington, is a 135-metre scoria cone on the Auckland isthmus, New Zealand — part of the Auckland Volcanic Field and one of its youngest cones, erupting roughly 10,000 years ago. The Māori name 'Maungarei' means 'the watchful mountain', and its slopes once held one of the largest pā (fortified settlements) on the isthmus, still visible in the terracing and storage pits (rua) across its flanks. The summit offers 360-degree views over the Waitematā Harbour, central Auckland, Rangitoto and the surrounding volcanic plain. The mountain is managed by the Tūpuna Maunga o Tāmaki Makaurau Authority as a sacred maunga; its summit road is now free of private vehicles, so visitors walk up from the Stonefields/Waimā Road area, partly via a sealed path and a popular flight of steps known as the '167 steps'. Its summit crater is among the deepest and best-preserved of the Auckland cones. A short but steep urban walk, Maungarei is a favourite of locals and travellers for exercise and sunsets.

Routes
Jalur Lingkar Kawah (Crater Rim Loop)
MudahFrom the top, a path circles the deep Maungarei crater rim — one of the best-preserved of the Auckland cones — giving views in every direction over the isthmus, Rangitoto and neighbouring cones.
SourceWaimā Road / Stonefields ke Puncak (via '167 steps')
MudahThe most common summit walk from the Waimā Road/Stonefields side: up the vehicle-free sealed road and the popular flight known as the '167 steps' to the crater rim and summit. Short but steep, with 360-degree views over Auckland and the harbour.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Experiences at Maungarei centre on the short but steep walk to the summit of this scoria cone in the heart of the Auckland isthmus. First-person sources are climb vlogs from the Stonefields/Waimā Road side — some climbing the popular '167 steps', circling the crater rim, and taking in 360-degree views over the Waitematā Harbour, central Auckland and Rangitoto. The official Tūpuna Maunga Authority site adds cultural context (sacred maunga, pā remains) and the vehicle-free access rules.
