Description
Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill (182 m) is an iconic volcanic scoria cone in the heart of Auckland, set within Cornwall Park and the One Tree Hill Domain, which together form over 200 hectares of green space. Its summit is crowned by a stone obelisk — a memorial to the Māori people bequeathed by Sir John Logan Campbell, who is buried beneath it; designed by Richard Abbott, it was unveiled in 1948. The English name "One Tree Hill" comes from a single summit tree: first a native tōtara, later a Monterey pine planted by Campbell in 1875. That pine was felled after a series of protest attacks and finally removed in 2000; in 2016 a grove of native tōtara and pōhutukawa was replanted. Long before that, the maunga was the largest pā on the Auckland isthmus, with extensive terraces and defensive earthworks built from the 17th century that remain clearly visible on its slopes. The "climb" is an easy uphill walk through Cornwall Park's meadows to a summit with a 360-degree panorama of the city and both harbours. The summit has been closed to general vehicles since March 2019, and the maunga is administered by the Tūpuna Maunga Authority following the 2014 Treaty of Waitangi settlement.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Accounts of Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill are almost always an easy uphill walk through Cornwall Park's meadows to the obelisk-crowned summit. Walking tours and vlogs repeatedly highlight the 360-degree panorama of Auckland and its two harbours, the memorial obelisk with Sir John Logan Campbell's grave beneath it, the grove of native trees that replaced the lost legendary "one tree", and the ancient Māori pā terraces marking the slopes. Many visitors pair it with Cornwall Park — gentle paved paths, grazing sheep and old trees — making it one of the city's most-loved green spaces. Several recordings are by international travellers, reflecting its popularity.
