Description
Mauao, also known as Mount Maunganui or 'The Mount', is a 232-metre coastal hill at the tip of the Tauranga peninsula in the Bay of Plenty on New Zealand's North Island. Geologically it is a rhyolite lava dome at the northern end of the Tauranga Volcanic Centre, formed about 2.3 million years ago and now joined to the mainland by a tombolo (sand isthmus) that formed roughly 4,000 years ago. To Māori, Mauao is sacred (tapu): its name means roughly 'caught by the morning light', referencing a legend of a nameless hill that sought to drown itself over unrequited love but was held back by the dawn. Ownership was returned to three iwi (Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāti Pūkenga) in 2008 and it is co-managed with Tauranga City Council. The short but steep, staircase-heavy summit track rewards hikers with a 360° panorama over the Bay of Plenty, Matakana Island, and Mount Maunganui beach, while the 3.4 km base track loops the foot of the hill and is often cited as one of New Zealand's most popular walks.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Accounts of climbing Mauao consistently describe a short but steep summit track—a staircase-heavy 'thigh burner'—rewarded with a 360° view over the Bay of Plenty and Mount Maunganui beach. Vlogs show the staircase-laden Waikorire track on the eastern side, the Oruahine track curving around the north-west with open-ocean and Matakana Island views, and the flat 3.4 km base track looping the foot of the hill. Many call it New Zealand's most popular walk, advising visitors to go when it is cool, carry water, and respect the hill's sacred (tapu) status.
