Description
Matroosberg (about 2,249 m) is the highest peak of the Hex River Mountains in the Western Cape, South Africa, and the highest point in the Cape Winelands District. It belongs to the Cape Fold Belt (sedimentary rock, non-volcanic) and is one of the tallest peaks in the province. In winter its upper slopes are often snow-covered, making it a popular snow-hunting destination from Cape Town (about 175 km away); the northern slope even hosts a small ski area, home of the South African Ski Association. The summit hike typically covers about 19 km round trip over 8–10 hours, starting from around 1,250 m within the private nature reserve.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Experiences on Matroosberg mostly revolve around the summit hike and winter snow-hunting. Hikers describe a long round trip of about 19 km from the private nature reserve, rocky terrain near the top, and biting cold when cold fronts bring snow to the upper slopes—a rare sight in South Africa. Besides hiking on foot, the area is also reached via a popular 4x4 route to the snow line.
