Description
Matafao Peak (653 m) is the highest point on Tutuila Island in American Samoa, rising above Pago Pago Harbor. It is not an active volcano but a volcanic plug — the eroded trachyte core of an old volcano, much like Rainmaker Mountain across the harbor. Its summit zone is designated a National Natural Landmark for its montane vegetation and Samoan endemics, including a rare fern restricted to Tutuila's trachyte plugs. As a hike it has a wild reputation: the trailhead at the high point of the Pago Pago–Fagasa Road (Fagasa Pass) is barely marked and begins at a rusty metal ladder, while the route to the top is often faint, muddy and overgrown, with NPS-installed ropes and rungs assisting the steep final section. The round trip takes about 4–5 hours and rewards hikers with sweeping views over the harbor and the Pacific — Tutuila's most iconic half-day climb.

Climbing Experiences
Experiences on Matafao Peak center on its wild terrain: a hidden trailhead at Fagasa Pass that starts up an old metal ladder, a faint muddy path through dense scrub, and ropes and rungs on the steep section near the top. Hikers repeatedly note how it feels like bushwhacking rather than a groomed tourist trail, the reward of sweeping views over Pago Pago Harbor from the summit, and the need for plenty of water and an early start in the tropical heat. As Tutuila's highest peak, Matafao also regularly features in roundups of American Samoa's best hikes.
