Description
Mariepskop (1,947 m) is one of the highest peaks of the northern Drakensberg and the highest point of South Africa's Blyde River Canyon, standing at the junction of three conservation areas (Mariepskop Forest Reserve, Mariepskop State Forest and the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve) on the Mpumalanga–Limpopo border. Unlike most of the basalt Drakensberg, Mariepskop is built of ancient quartzitic sedimentary rock of the Transvaal Supergroup, so it is not volcanic. Its summit is bounded by sheer cliffs on several sides and rises far above the surrounding Lowveld, creating a cooler climate and a distinctive ecosystem of mist-belt forest, grassland and rare plants — well over 2,000 plant species. The mountain is named for Maripe Mashile, a 19th-century Pulana chief who used its heights as a stronghold; in the 1950s a road and a military radar station were built on top. Today Mariepskop is a popular 4x4 and hiking destination: from the summit, clear-day panoramas stretch across the Lowveld to Kruger National Park and as far as Mozambique.

Routes
Jalur Hiking Hutan Kabut & Air Terjun (berpemandu)
Sedang; jalur di cagar hutan kerap kurang bertanda dan mudah membuat tersesat — disarankan berpemanduA walking alternative for those who want to experience Mariepskop's ecosystems up close: trails through the mist-belt forest, protea-dotted grassland, and toward the Mariepskop falls and canyon-edge viewpoints. Because many paths are poorly marked and can be overgrown, only experienced hikers should go unguided; others are advised to take a local guide. The area is highly biodiverse, with well over 2,000 plant species.

Naik ke Puncak via Mariepskop Pass & Menara Radar (4x4)
Jalan kaki mudah di puncak, namun akses jalan gravel menuntut kendaraan 4x4 dan pengemudian hati-hatiThe most common route to Mariepskop's high point (1,947 m). From the Mariepskop forestry gate (entry fee), the steep gravel 'Mariepskop Pass' takes a 4x4 up through dense, often cloud-wrapped mist forest to the former military radar-station complex near the top. From the towers, visitors need only a short walk (~20–30 m uphill) to the summit trig beacon. On a clear day the 360-degree panorama runs across the Blyde River Canyon, the Three Rondavels and the Lowveld toward Kruger National Park. The road can be steep and washed-out; avoid it in heavy rain.

Bayar tiket masuk; mulai jalan gravel menanjak, butuh 4x4

Climbing Experiences
Experiences on Mariepskop mostly centre on the journey to the top via the 'Mariepskop Pass' — a steep gravel road that demands a 4x4 — followed by a short walk from the radar-tower complex to the high point (1,947 m). Visitors and hikers highlight the 360-degree panorama across the Blyde River Canyon and the Lowveld toward Kruger, the dense and often cloud-wrapped mist forest, the Mariepskop falls, and the need for care because forest trails are poorly marked. Many recommend a guide for hiking off the main road.
