Description

The Mandara Mountains (Monts Mandara) are a volcanic range running about 190 km along the northern Cameroon and Nigeria border, from the Benue River in the south to the north-west of Maroua. Their highest point is Mont Oupay (~1,494 m). What sets them apart is not their height but a dramatic landscape of eroded volcanic plugs and rock towers rising from the plain, terraced farmland, and the villages of the Kapsiki/Kirdi people. The best-known hub is the Rhumsiki area with the Pic de Rhumsiki (Kapsiki Peak), a soaring lava spire that has become the emblem of guided village-to-village treks between traditional settlements. Trekking here is mostly village-to-village walking with short scrambles to the base of the rock towers, rather than high technical mountaineering.

Routes

Mont Oupay (titik tertinggi ~1.494 m)

Menengah, tanjakan berbatu ke puncak tertinggi massif
Day-hike

A climb of Mont Oupay, the highest point of the Mandara Mountains (~1,494 m). The day-hike ascends rocky volcanic terrain with wide views over the whole massif and surrounding plains; it is described in the Mandara day-hike guide with distance and difficulty estimates.

Pic de Rhumsiki (Kapsiki Peak) dari desa Rhumsiki

Menengah, jalan kaki desa + scramble singkat ke kaki menara lava; panas dan berbatu
Setengah hari (berpemandu dari desa)

The most iconic route in the Mandara Mountains: from Rhumsiki village a local guide leads through terraced fields and Kapsiki hamlets toward the Pic de Rhumsiki, a soaring lava tower (volcanic plug) that is the emblem of the area. The focus is on landscape and village culture rather than a technical ascent of the spire itself.

Trek desa Kapsiki & Sukur (village-to-village)

Ringan-menengah, jalan kaki antar perkampungan tradisional
1 hari atau lebih (bisa dirangkai antar desa)

A rural trek linking the Kapsiki villages and the Sukur cultural landscape (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) on the Nigeria-Cameroon side. The route emphasises walking between settlements, stone terraces and traditional smithing, often done as part of a guided expedition.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences in the Mandara Mountains center on the Rhumsiki area and the Kapsiki/Kirdi villages of Cameroon's Far North, where volcanic rock towers and plugs form the backdrop to guided village treks. The notes below combine French-language travel videos (Maroua to Rhumsiki, the Rhumsiki campsite), a detailed cross-massif day-hike guidebook (Sukur, Rhumsiki Peak, Mont Oupay, Mora, the Kapsiki Plateau) and first-hand blogger reports. Every video is live-verified via YouTube oEmbed and each site/blog via HTTP.
