Description
Manaro Voui (also spelled Manaro Vui; its summit known as Lombenben) is a large shield volcano whose emergent portion forms the island of Ambae (Aoba) in Vanuatu. Its summit reaches 1,496 m above sea level — and about 3,900 m above the sea floor, making it one of the most massive volcanoes in the region. Its summit caldera holds crater lakes, including Lake Voui, whose colour can shift from turquoise to reddish-brown with the volcano's 'mood'. According to local custom the summit's valley and lakes are a sacred place and paradise where spirits go to live after death. Ambae drew world attention when the major 2017–2018 eruption forced the evacuation of the whole island's population — one of the largest evacuations in Vanuatu's history. In quiet periods, villagers offer jungle treks up to the caldera to see the crater lakes, with options to camp at the rim, share local feasting and a kava ceremony. Vanuatu's Meteorology and Geohazards Department (VMGD) monitors the volcano live, so climbs always follow the official alert level.
