Information
- Elevation
- 1.852 m
- Country
- Afrika Selatan (ZA)
- Location / Range
- Magaliesberg — membentang melengkung ~120 km dari dekat Rustenburg (North West) hingga Pretoria (Gauteng), Afrika Selatan bagian utara; dekat Cradle of Humankind
- Mountain type
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates
- -25.8597, 27.5339
- Difficulty
- Bervariasi: banyak jalur harian mudah–menengah dengan pemandangan lembah, namun kloof seperti Tonquani menuntut kloofing/scrambling dan sebagian abseil sehingga tergolong menengah–sulit.
- Best Season
- Bulan-bulan lebih sejuk dan kering (musim gugur–dingin, sekitar April–September) umumnya paling nyaman; musim panas panas dengan badai petir sore (rata-rata ~650 mm/tahun).
- Permits & Rules
- Banyak jalur berada di cagar/lahan swasta yang wajib pemesanan: Mountain Sanctuary Park (reservasi mandiri) dan kloof Tonquani/Cedarberg yang dikelola Mountain Club South Africa (MCSA) — non-anggota wajib membeli izin. Cableway di Hartbeespoort Dam berbayar.
- Hazards
- Panas dan badai petir musim panas, tebing curam serta risiko kloofing (menuruni ngarai lewat gully/abseil), jalur masuk panjang di sebagian akses, dan keharusan izin/pemesanan sebelum masuk lahan swasta.
Description
The Magaliesberg is a ~120 km quartzite ridge in northern South Africa curving from near Rustenburg until it clips the edge of Pretoria. Though not high (its top, Nooitgedacht, is ~1,852 m), it is one of Earth's oldest ranges: its sediments were laid down billions of years ago and then tilted by the Bushveld intrusion around 2 billion years ago, producing long cliffs and deep, clear-watered kloofs (gorges). In 2015 the area was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Sitting right in the heart of Gauteng and near the Cradle of Humankind, the Magaliesberg is one of South Africa's most popular day-hiking destinations — from the Hartbeespoort cableway and family trails at Mountain Sanctuary Park to kloofing adventures in the famed Upper Tonquani with its high cliffs, waterfalls and clear pools. Most trails lie on private or MCSA land and require booking or permits.

Mudah–menengahA private reserve near Buffelspoort with a network of trails across 1,000+ ha of rock formations and natural pools; entry/booking required.
SourceUpper Tonquani Kloof
Menengah–sulit (kloofing/scrambling, sebagian abseil)A spectacular gorge of high cliffs, waterfalls and clear pools; managed by the MCSA, so non-members must buy permits from the MCSA Johannesburg Section.
SourceVergenoeg Day Hike (Van Gaalen Trails)
MenengahA popular day hike on the Vergenoeg/Van Gaalen side with valley views and the range's characteristic quartzite terrain.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Experiences on the Magaliesberg come in two flavours: quiet family/day trails in reserves such as Mountain Sanctuary Park and Vergenoeg, and kloofing adventures down the Tonquani–Cedarberg gorges with clear pools and cliff jumps. The videos show quartzite terrain, rock formations and waterfalls, and underline the need to book or hold permits since many trails are on private or MCSA land.
