Description
Lupanga Peak (~2,138 m) is one of the best-known and most-hiked summits of the Uluguru Mountains, rising directly above the town of Morogoro in eastern Tanzania. The Ulugurus form part of the Eastern Arc Mountains — a chain of ancient crystalline fault-block ranges renowned as one of Africa's most important endemic-biodiversity hotspots, whose montane rainforest acts as a water tower for the Ruvu River and the city of Dar es Salaam. The climb to Lupanga is steep, slippery when wet, and largely unmarked, so a local guide is strongly recommended; the summit is thickly vegetated, so the best views come along the ridge rather than the top. Other popular nearby objectives include the Choma Waterfalls and Morningside, a former German colonial-era hut.
Routes
Lupanga Peak (dari Forest Hill Road)
Berat / menantangSteep full-day climb to Lupanga Peak (~2,138–2,150 m), starting at the end of Forest Hill Road through farmland into the nature reserve along a ridge. Very steep and slippery when wet; the summit is overgrown with limited views. A guide is strongly recommended as the trail is unmarked.
SourceMorningside & Air Terjun Choma (jalur populer)
Mudah–sedangThe most popular route from Morogoro town: an easy-to-moderate walk past villages to the Choma Waterfalls (swimmable; ~10,000 TZS entry), then a moderate climb to Morningside, a former German colonial-era hut (~1,000 m) with valley views.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Hiking in the Uluguru Mountains generally starts from the town of Morogoro. The most popular objectives are the Choma Waterfalls and Morningside (a former German hut), while Lupanga Peak (~2,138 m) is the target for more committed hikers: steep, slippery when wet, and largely unmarked, so a local guide is strongly advised. Hikers report lush rainforest, views over Morogoro town from the slopes, and an overgrown summit where views are actually limited at the very top.
