Description

Longs Peak is a granite summit in Colorado’s Front Range and the highest point in Rocky Mountain National Park. Wikidata lists an elevation of 4,345 m; NPS uses 14,259 feet. The Keyhole summit route requires scrambling and route-finding on exposed terrain above the Boulder Field. The north-side Cables Route has a 5.4 climbing section in summer; Kiener’s combines Lambs Slide, Broadway, and alpine rock terrain. Check the NPS conditions report before setting out: snow, ice, and changing weather can affect the routes even in summer.

Routes

Cables Route (North Face)

5.4 saat musim panas; kondisi musim dingin dapat mencapai M2

Approach through the Boulder Field and Chasm View to the north face. Much of the route is scrambling, but it includes a 5.4 climbing section; winter accounts describe M2 mixed terrain. Rope and descent planning are integral to this technical climb.

Keyhole Route (rute standar)

Scrambling terpapar; NPS tidak memberi rating teknis/non-teknis
24.10 km 10–15 jam pulang-pergi / hours round trip

Approximately 15 miles round trip from Longs Peak Trailhead. The maintained trail ends at the Boulder Field, followed by rocky terrain to the Keyhole and summit section. Red-and-yellow markers help navigation but can be covered by snow. Reassess weather, energy, and time at the Keyhole before continuing.

Kiener’s Route

Alpine: salju/es dan batu kelas 4; variasi lintasan dapat mencapai kelas 5

From Chasm Lake and Mills Glacier, the route climbs Lambs Slide and traverses Broadway before continuing up the upper east face. Abegg distinguishes a Class 4 line from Class 5 variations. Snow, ice, and route choices affect equipment needs; the experienced author’s time is not a general estimate.

Climbing Experiences

This collection includes four climbing videos, Steph Abegg’s illustrated accounts, and a Colorado Mountain Club trip that ended at the Keyhole. The club report shows how fresh snow and travel time can prompt a summit turnaround. Video summaries are limited to verified metadata; dated trip reports do not replace a current conditions check.
