Description
Licancabur (5,920 m) is a pyramid-shaped stratovolcano straddling the Bolivia–Chile border in the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes, rising directly above the emerald Laguna Verde on the Atacama altiplano. Its summit is capped by a 400–500 m crater holding Licancabur Lake — one of the highest lakes on Earth, which stays liquid despite deeply sub-zero temperatures and has drawn scientific study of life in extreme environments. Because of the arid climate the mountain has no glaciers. Licancabur carries deep cultural significance, with Inca and Atacama archaeological sites on its summit and lower slopes among the most important in the region. The standard ascent is made from the Bolivian side near Laguna Verde (~4,600 m), following an ancient Inca-style path up the northeast flank that switchbacks over loose scree to the crater rim — non-technical but very demanding due to the altitude and terrain. The Chilean side has no safe route, so climbing and permits are arranged from Bolivia with logistics based in San Pedro de Atacama.

Routes
Ruta Noreste (Ruta Inca) — rute normal dari Laguna Verde / sisi Bolivia
Berat ("Algo Difícil"; non-teknis tetapi menuntut fisik & ketinggian)From the vehicle parking near Laguna Verde at about 4,620 m, an ancient Inca-style trail climbs the northeast flank in a long zigzag over roughly 40-degree loose scree to the 5,920 m crater rim with its summit lake and Inca ruins. The Chilean side has no safe path, so the climb is done from Bolivia with a mandatory permit and tours departing from San Pedro de Atacama.
Climbing Experiences
Licancabur (5,920 m), a pyramid stratovolcano on the Bolivia–Chile border above Laguna Verde, with a summit crater lake. Climbers highlight the exhausting steep scree, extreme altitude, and logistics from San Pedro de Atacama — climbed from the Bolivian side.
