Description
Le Morne Brabant is a 556 m basaltic monolith rising at the southwestern tip of Mauritius, ringed by an Indian Ocean lagoon. More than a hiking destination, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2008) of deep significance: its slopes and caves sheltered runaway slaves (maroons) in the 18th–19th centuries, making Le Morne a symbol of resistance to slavery and of freedom. The climb is a popular half-day trek: the first half is a gentle forest path to the foot of the cliffs, then the upper half turns steep and rocky with rope- and chain-assisted scrambling to the summit cross. From the top the panorama runs over the turquoise lagoon, reefs, and the island's southwestern coast. Because the upper section is technical and exposed, a local guide is strongly advised.

MenengahThe main trail leaves the mountain's foot near Le Morne village: the first half is a gentle forest walk to the foot of the cliffs, then the upper half turns steep and rocky with rope- and chain-assisted scrambling to the summit cross. The technical upper section is best done with a licensed local guide.
