Description

Lassen Peak (3,187 m) is a giant lava dome in Lassen Volcanic National Park, Northern California, and the southernmost active volcano in the Cascade Range of the United States. It belongs to the Cascade Volcanic Arc that stretches from British Columbia to Northern California. The peak is best known for its 1914–1917 eruptions — one of the last major eruptions on the U.S. mainland before Mount St. Helens in 1980 — now documented by the USGS. Its summit path, the Lassen Peak Trail, is a day hike of about 8 km round trip that climbs dozens of switchbacks up open volcanic-ash slopes; though not technically hard, it is strenuous, shadeless and waterless, so an early start is strongly advised to avoid afternoon thunderstorms. The summit gives views of Mount Shasta to the north and of the park's craters, fumaroles and volcanic landscape. As an active volcano, the area is continuously monitored by the USGS California Volcano Observatory.

Routes

Lassen Peak Trail (rute puncak standar, pulang-pergi)

Berat (strenuous) — non-teknis
Sehari (~4–5 jam pulang-pergi)

The standard summit route from the south, starting at the Lassen Peak trailhead (~2,590 m) on the main park road (Hwy 89). It runs about 8 km round trip with ~596 m of gain up dozens of switchbacks on volcanic ash/cinder slopes, then a rocky ridge and a short scramble to the true 3,187 m summit. No special permit is needed (park entrance fee applies), but the trail is fully exposed with no shade and no water — carry ample water and sun protection and start early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms. NPS estimates 4–5 hours round trip.
