Description

La Meije (Grand Pic, 3,983 m) is one of France's most iconic alpine summits, towering above the village of La Grave in the Massif des Écrins (Dauphiné). It is famous as one of the last great Alpine peaks to be climbed — the Grand Pic was only reached in 1877 by Emmanuel Boileau de Castelnau with guides Pierre Gaspard (father and son) — because it has no 'easy' way to the top. Even its normal route is a serious mixed rock-and-ice climb. The Traversée de la Meije, crossing the whole jagged ridge from the Grand Pic to the Doigt de Dieu and the eastern peaks, is regarded as one of the classic 'grande courses' of the Alps. At its northern foot, La Grave is a legendary off-piste freeride skiing mecca in winter, framed by the mountain's dramatic north face.

Routes

Traversée de la Meije (Grand Pic → Doigt de Dieu → puncak timur)

Alpin D — traversée panjang bergerigi, sangat terekspos
2 hari (grande course; sering turun ke Refuge de l'Aigle)

One of the classic 'grande courses' of the Alps: traversing the entire Meije ridge from the Grand Pic over the Doigt de Dieu to the eastern summits (Meije Orientale). The route is long, exposed, and committing, combining rock climbing and ice movement along the mountain's crest, usually with a hut overnight. For experienced alpinists or those with a guide only.

Voie normale du Grand Pic (Arête du Promontoire)

Alpin sekelas AD/D — panjat batu terekspos + medan campuran es
2 hari (menginap di Refuge du Promontoire; hari puncak panjang)

The 'normal' route to the Grand Pic de la Meije, yet still a serious alpine climb with no easy way up. From La Bérarde, climbers ascend to the Refuge du Promontoire then tackle the Arête du Promontoire — an exposed rock ridge with climbing pitches and mixed ice terrain to the 3,983 m summit. It demands climbing skill, rope work, and glacier experience; many hire a guide. This was the last great Alpine peak to be climbed (1877), reflecting how hard the route to the top is.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences on La Meije are almost always serious alpinism rather than hillwalking. The classic outing is the Traversée de la Meije — crossing the jagged ridge from the Grand Pic eastward — a 'grande course' demanding rock climbing, glacier and ice movement, and overnight hut stays (Promontoire or Aigle). Climbers' videos show the exposed mixed terrain and dramatic Oisans panoramas. On the other hand, the village of La Grave at its foot is an icon of off-piste freeride skiing in winter, and a viewing point for the mountain's grand north face via cable car.
