- Difficulty
- Best Season
- Musim kemarau, kira-kira Nov–Apr.
Description
La Malinche (4,461 m), also called Matlalcueye or Malintzin, is a dormant stratovolcano on the border of Tlaxcala and Puebla states in Mexico, part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. Dormant for roughly 3,100 years, its slopes are now clothed in pine, sacred fir and alder forest rising to open zacatonal grassland near the top. As Mexico's sixth-highest peak it is a favourite acclimatization hike before bigger objectives such as Pico de Orizaba and Iztaccíhuatl. The usual start is the Centro Vacacional Malintzi (IMSS) resort at about 3,080 m; from there the trail climbs through forest and then sandy, rocky ground to the summit crater, with distant views of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. The ascent is physically demanding but non-technical, except after winter snowfall when crampons and an ice axe are needed. Its modern name honours Hernán Cortés's interpreter, while the indigenous Matlalcueitl means "lady of the blue skirt", a Tlaxcalan rain goddess.

Routes
Aklimatisasi untuk Orizaba/Iztaccíhuatl
MenengahMany climbers use La Malinche as an acclimatization stepping stone before Pico de Orizaba (5,636 m) or Iztaccíhuatl (5,230 m). Sleeping in the Malintzi cabins/campground (~3,080 m) and summiting the next day helps the body adapt to altitude without technical difficulty, while testing cold-weather kit and pacing.

Menengah (non-teknis; Class 2 dengan satu bagian pendek Class 3)The standard and most popular trail, starting from the Malintzi resort (~3,080 m). About 13 km round trip with ~1,300 m of gain: through pine/fir forest, out onto zacatonal grassland, then a tiring sandy, rocky (scree) ridge to the summit crater at ~4,461 m. Usually 5–8 hours; an early start is advised to descend before weather deteriorates. Non-technical except after snowfall (Dec–Mar), when micro-spikes/crampons are needed.
