Description

La Grande Soufrière (1,467 m) on Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe, is an active volcano and the highest point of Guadeloupe and of the entire Lesser Antilles. Set in the heart of the Guadeloupe National Park, its summit—known as La Découverte—is cloaked in fumaroles venting steam and sulphurous gas, including the 'Gouffre Tarissan' pit nicknamed 'La Porte de l'Enfer' (the gate of hell). The climb is a popular but committing hike, not recommended for beginners: from the free Bains Jaunes car park (~950 m) hikers cross tropical forest to the Savane à Mulets plateau (~1,140 m), then follow the Chemin des Dames (normal route, yellow markers) skirting the volcano's west side—past the scar of the 1798 phreatic eruption and the Grande Faille—before reaching the summit. It is roughly 6.5 km round trip with about 550 m of ascent from Bains Jaunes, typically 4–5 hours. The summit is almost always cloudy, windy and cold, so an early start gives the best chance of a view. Since May 2024 parts of the crater zone have been restricted because of intensified fumarolic activity.

Climbing La Grande Soufrière is typically a 4–5 hour round-trip hike from the Bains Jaunes car park, crossing tropical forest to the Savane à Mulets plateau and then following the Chemin des Dames to the fumarole-covered La Découverte summit (1,467 m). Hikers stress the frequently cloudy, windy and cold summit weather, slippery rocky-muddy terrain, the steep final section, and the sulphur smell and steam from the fumarole pits.
