Description

Kong Kemul (also known as Mount Kemul, Kemoel, or Kemal) is a mountain deep in the interior of North Kalimantan, located in the Long Sule area of Kayan Hilir subdistrict, Malinau Regency. Rising to approximately 2,053 metres above sea level, it is one of the more remote and seldom-climbed peaks on Borneo. Its primary importance is scientific: Kong Kemul is the type locality of two distinct pitcher plant species, Nepenthes fusca and Nepenthes mollis. The first specimen of Nepenthes fusca was collected by Dutch botanist Frederik Endert on 12 October 1925 on the mountain's slopes at around 1,500 metres elevation. Given its remoteness in the Bornean interior, trekking and tourism information for this peak remains extremely limited; available records derive largely from historical botanical expeditions.
