Description

Kohala (1,670 m) is the oldest and northernmost of the five shield volcanoes that build the Island of Hawaiʻi, estimated to have risen above the sea more than a million years ago and now extinct. Unlike its younger, gently sloped neighbours, Kohala has been deeply eroded: its northeastern windward side is carved into a chain of cliff-walled amphitheatre valleys—Pololū, Honokāne and Waipiʻo—that form some of the island's most dramatic scenery. Its true summit, in the Kohala Forest Reserve, is a misty, rain-soaked bog and rainforest rarely reached by hikers. As a result, most hiking on Kohala centres on its iconic edge trails: Pololū Valley, where visitors descend a steep cliff on the Awini Trail to a black-sand beach and ironwood forest, with a sweeping view of the cliff-bound coastline stretching toward Waipiʻo. Kohala is also rich in history as the birthplace of King Kamehameha I.

Bagian atas Kohala menuju punggungan dan puncak sejati berupa rawa serta hutan hujan berkabut di Kohala Forest Reserve yang sangat basah dan jarang didaki. Sebagian kawasan berada di tanah privat/konservasi dengan akses terbatas. Pendaki yang menjelajah lebih tinggi menggambarkan medan hijau berlumpur dan cuaca yang cepat berubah; bukan jalur wisata umum dan menuntut persiapan lebih.

Pololū Valley (Awini Trail) — titik pandang ke pantai pasir hitam

Jalur tepi paling populer di Kohala. Dari titik pandang Pololū di ujung Akoni Pule Highway, jalur Awini menuruni dinding tebing curam melalui switchback menuju pantai pasir hitam dan hutan ironwood di dasar lembah. Pemandangan garis pantai bertebing membentang ke arah Waipiʻo. Jalur bisa sangat licin setelah hujan, arus laut berbahaya (bukan untuk berenang), dan parkir sangat terbatas sehingga sempat diberlakukan pembatasan/reservasi. Climbing Experiences

Because Kohala's true summit is a misty, rarely visited rainforest bog, almost every shared experience centres on the iconic edge trails on the mountain's northern flank—above all Pololū Valley. Vlogs and trip notes describe the steep cliff descent via switchbacks from the Pololū lookout to the black-sand beach and ironwood forest below, then a tiring climb back out; many highlight the slippery, muddy trail after rain, dangerous ocean currents, and the parking/reservation restrictions now in place.
