Description

Kitadake (北岳, 3,193 m) is Japan's second highest mountain, standing in the heart of Minami Alps National Park (Southern Japanese Alps) in Yamanashi Prefecture. Unlike Mount Fuji, a standalone stratovolcano, Kitadake is a non-volcanic metamorphic massif forming part of the Southern Alps chain alongside Ainodake (3,189 m) and Notoridake — together known as the 'Shirane Sanzan' (Three White Mountains). Its elevation above 3,000 m makes it a favourite for Japanese mountain hikers seeking genuine alpine terrain without Fuji's summer crowds. The summit commands 360° panoramic views: Fuji to the east, the Northern Alps to the northwest, and the Southern Alps chain stretching north and south — and on clear days, distant ranges beyond. The trailhead is Hirogawara (広河原, about 1,524 m), a valley starting point on the Shirane River accessible only by public bus from Yamanashi. Two main trails — via Shirane Oike Goya hut and via the Kusakuberi grassland slope — merge on the upper ridge before the final rocky push to the narrow summit. Kitadake is also known for rare alpine flora, including Kitadake-sou (Callianthemum hondoense), an endemic plant found only on this peak.

Routes

Hirogawara Gully Course (大樺沢ルート) — Via Lembah Salju

Jalur Hirogawara via Boshi Ridge (Katano-koya Route)

Alternative route from Hirogawara via Shirane-oike hut to Boshi Ridge. The upper section features open rocky scree and minor scrambling above the treeline. Ideal for those planning the full Shirane Sanzan traverse continuing to Ai-no-dake and Notori-dake.

Jalur Hirogawara via Shirane-oike & Kusasuberi (rute loop utama)

The main loop from Hirogawara (official trailhead, ~1,524 m), reachable only by bus from Kofu Station. Ascend via the Okanba-sawa valley to Futamata junction, then a ridge walk to the summit; descend via the Kusasuberi grassland slope back to Hirogawara. Elevation gain ~1,670 m. Mountain huts Shirane-oike-koya and Kitadake Sanso are bookable online. Crampons required in early season (July) due to lingering snow in Okanba-sawa.

Jalur Hirogawara — Rute Alternatif via Daichi Grass (Ōyamaishi Ridge)

This alternate route from Hirogawara branches east at Shirane Oike and ascends via Ōyamaishi Ridge (also called the Daichi Grass route), which opens up panoramic views of the mountain's flanks earlier in the climb. It is slightly steeper in places than the Kata-no-koya route but offers scenic variety and less crowding. Good for hikers already familiar with Kitadake who want a different perspective, or for making a loop (ascend one way, descend the other). In early season (May–June), lingering snow makes this route more hazardous.

Jalur Okamba-zawa Kanan (大樺沢右俣コース) — rute lembah sungai

An alternative route from Hirogawara that follows the Okamba-zawa river valley eastward before turning up the right fork (migimata) to the Kotaro Ridge at around 2,700 m. Longer but more gradual than the Kusasuberi trail; snow can linger in the valley into July. This route is frequently used to form a loop: ascending via Kusasuberi and descending the left fork (hidarimata), or vice versa.

Route Segments

  1. 1

    Hirogawara → Okamba-zawa Ichi-no-mata

    ⏱ 2 jam 1.900 mdpl

Menyusuri jalan hutan landai di sepanjang aliran sungai Okamba-zawa

  2. 2

    Ichi-no-mata → Kotaro Ridge (右俣コル)

    ⏱ 3–4 jam 2.700 mdpl

Mendaki cabang kanan lembah; salju tersisa hingga Juli; medan berbatu setelah treeline

  3. 3

Kotaro Ridge → Puncak Kitadake (lewat Kata-no-koya)

    ⏱ 1,5–2 jam 3.193 mdpl

The alternative route commonly used as a descent from the summit or as part of the Shirane Sanzan (Three White Peaks) traverse. From the summit, descend south along the open ridge to Kitadake Sansō hut (北岳山荘, ~2,900 m). From here, hikers may continue south to Ainodake (3,190 m, about 2.5 hours) and Nōtori-dake (3,026 m, about 3.5 hours from Sansō) to complete the classic Shirane Sanzan traverse. Descent from Nōtori-dake via the Nōtori-sawa trail returns to Hirogawara. The full traverse is typically done over 2–3 days with hut stays at Kitadake Sansō and/or Nōtori-dake Sansō.

Rute Shirane-oike via Lembah Ōkanbazawa (Rute Standar Naik)

The most popular and recommended ascent route for Kitadake. Starting from the Hirogawara trailhead (1,525 m), reached by bus about 2 hours from Kofu Station (private cars are banned on the approach road). From Hirogawara, hikers cross a suspension bridge and follow the left bank of the Norogawa river up into the Ōkanbazawa valley. At the fork take the left path toward Futamata (about 2.5 hours), then continue up through the Daisekkei (the large snow couloir — check conditions before entry). Above the Daisekkei, the path reaches the Shirane-oike pond and adjacent hut, a popular rest point. From the hut, turn right to ascend steeply toward Kata-no-Koya (肩の小屋, ~3,000 m) — the last shelter before the summit — via a rocky, exposed section with fixed chains and ropes. From Kata-no-Koya to the summit is about 30 minutes. On a clear day, Mount Fuji is dramatically visible to the northwest, Ainodake lies to the south, and the Southern Alps spread in all directions.

Shirane Sanzan Traverse (Hirogawara → Kitadake → Ainodake → Narada)

Menengah–Sulit (traversal punggung panjang; total jarak ~18–22 km; akumulasi elevasi signifikan)

Traversal ikonik 'Tiga Puncak Putih' (白峰三山) menyusuri tiga puncak tertinggi Alpen Selatan: Kitadake (3.193 m) → Ainodake (3.190 m, tertinggi ketiga Jepang) → Notoridake (3.026 m), lalu turun ke Narada.

Shiranesawa Ridge Course (白根御池コース) — Rute Paling Populer

Climbing Experiences

Kitadake (3,193 m) is celebrated as a serious alpine hike distinct from the Fuji crowds: a rocky, steep trail with fixed chains above treeline, sweeping views of Fuji from the Kata-no-Koya shoulder ridge, and the rare endemic Kitadake buttercup in season. Most hikers take two or three days with a hut overnight, ascending via the Ōkanbazawa valley from Hirogawara and often continuing to traverse Ainodake. The videos and reports below capture a range of experiences — from ambitious day pushes to leisurely multi-day journeys enjoying alpine flowers and cloud seas.
