Information
- Elevation
- 2.388 m
- Country
- Sri Lanka (LK)
- Location / Range
- Dataran Tinggi Tengah Sri Lanka (Central Highlands) — dalam Taman Nasional Horton Plains, Distrik Nuwara Eliya
- Mountain type
- Puncak batuan metamorf dataran tinggi tengah Sri Lanka (non-vulkanik, kompleks Highland Prakambrium); puncak tertinggi kedua di Sri Lanka
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates
- 6.7992, 80.7667
- Difficulty
- Menengah: jalur pulang-pergi ±14 km (7 km sekali jalan) menempuh ±5–7 jam.
- Permits & Rules
- Wajib membeli tiket masuk Taman Nasional Horton Plains (dikelola Department of Wildlife Conservation). Pendakian dimulai dekat Farr Inn / gerbang taman.
Description
Kirigalpoththa (කිරිගල්පොත්ත, 2,388 m) is the second-highest mountain in Sri Lanka after Pidurutalagala (2,524 m). Because Pidurutalagala's summit is occupied by a military base and closed to the public, Kirigalpoththa is effectively the highest peak in the country whose summit the general public can reach. It stands near the town of Nuwara Eliya in the Nuwara Eliya District, at the heart of Horton Plains National Park — a highland reserve famous for the 'World's End' escarpment, its montane grasslands (patana), and perpetually misty cloud forest. A single trail of roughly seven kilometres leads to the summit, and because it is far less frequented than the park's main tourist loop it feels wild and solitary. Hikers cross open grassland interspersed with mossy forest patches, moving through drifting mist, before reaching a rocky summit with open views over the central highlands on clear days. With few trail markers and fog that rolls in suddenly, climbing Kirigalpoththa is regarded as one of Sri Lanka's most challenging yet most unspoilt treks.

Routes
Jalur Puncak Kirigalpoththa dari Horton Plains (Farr Inn)
Menengah — jalur panjang melewati padang rumput lembap dan hutan berkabut; samar dan minim penandaThe only official route to the Kirigalpoththa summit, and it branches away from Horton Plains' main tourist loop (World's End–Baker's Falls). The hike starts near Farr Inn / the park gate, then forks west across open, often boggy montane grassland (patana) dotted with mossy cloud-forest patches. The trail undulates gently but runs long, with several marshy sections and stream crossings. Because markers are sparse and fog rolls in suddenly, hikers are advised to start at first light, carry water and warm layers, and time the walk to exit before the park closes. The summit is a rocky outcrop with open views over the central highlands on clear days.
SourceClimbing Experiences
As the highest publicly accessible summit in Sri Lanka, Kirigalpoththa (2,388 m) draws hikers wanting the quiet side of Horton Plains National Park — far from the crowds of the World's End loop. A single ~7 km trail cuts through boggy montane grassland and misty cloud-forest patches, taking about 5–7 hours round trip. The vlogs below — in both English and Sinhala — capture a range of experiences: from wet, fog-bound day hikes and camping near the summit to honest notes on the faint trail and the need to start at first light.
