Description

Kimhandu (also spelled Kimhondu) is the highest peak of the Uluguru Mountains in the Morogoro Region of Tanzania, at about 2,633 m. The Ulugurus are part of the Eastern Arc Mountains — an ancient chain famous as one of Africa's most important biodiversity hotspots, rich in endemic species. Kimhandu is an ultra-prominent peak and one of the highest points of this eastern arc. The climb is demanding: from Morogoro town (about 55 km) one travels to a hillside village such as Lanzi and then Nyingwa as the starting point, followed by a long 10–12 hour round trip (roughly 7–8 hours up) through farmland, hamlets and dense, wet montane forest. The lower Uluguru area — peaks such as Bondwa and Lupanga, the Morningside ridge, and the Choma/Hululu waterfalls around Morogoro — is popular for day hikes, while Kimhandu is the true summit objective for more experienced trekkers.

Routes

Jalur Lanzi → Nyingwa → puncak Kimhandu

Berat — trek panjang lewat ladang dan hutan pegunungan lebat yang basah; menuntut kebugaran dan pemandu
10–12 jam pulang-pergi dalam sehari (±7–8 jam naik, 4–5 jam turun)

The Kimhandu route from Morogoro town (about 55 km): a 4WD drive to Lanzi village, then a motorcycle transfer to Nyingwa village, the starting point of the ascent. From Nyingwa a long uphill trek climbs through farmland, hamlets and the dense, humid montane forest of the Ulugurus to the ~2,633 m summit. The full round trip takes 10–12 hours (roughly 7–8 hours up, 4–5 hours down), demanding good fitness, an early start and a local guide. The dry season (June–October) is best, as the trail is slippery and muddy in the rains.
